My chickens are making nests in the straw in their run and everywhere but their nest box and have pretty much stopped laying. Occasionally we get an egg with bumps on the end. They act healthy and when I let them out they fly around and enjoy pecking and scratching as usual. We added a red light for at night and changed from wood chips to straw in their house. Could these changes have stopped the laying? We only get one egg a week now from our 2 hens and we used to get 2 every day. They are young chickens and just turned 1 in August.

This time of year is when most birds slow down due to less daylight. You can add light two hours before daybreak in order to get them back on schedule. Use white or yellow light, not red. It does not have to be real bright. I use a timer to turn mine on every morning.
