I had to cull my first chick today. It was the egg that hatched the fastest, all by himself, but then was out of it for 2 days. I thought it's leg was a little splayed and I gave him lots of electrolytes and nutri-drench. He perked up long enough for me to notice he had a bum leg. Thanks to WV & Walnut, I was able to tell it was a slipped tendon but it wouldn't go back in place. I really tried for a few hours. Then he had a little discharge in his eyes and I knew he was just sickly. Not for breeding. But the other two chicks are chubby and healthy! And I have eggs looking good for this weekend!
Awesome hatch!!
Can I ask how much you can sell a rooster for at auction? Sorry to hear that SC. How are you doing today? We have had luck with using a shop vac to get most the water out and then renting some drying fans. You have to drape the carpet up on something like a buckets or back of chairs and let it dry all the way out. Sorry to hear about the mixed up eggs Rossfam. Final update on my hatch last week. 12 hatched out of 14 good eggs. One did expire already. It pipped externally and then dried out so we helped it out. It had curled feet. It died a day later. So we have 11 new chicks on the ground. I need to get a good pic of the group. 6 yellow, 5 Marans chick color (one died) and 1 grey chick patterned like a Marans. Interesting. And a few of them have feathered shanks. Of the eggs left I did candle them and one had internally pipped. Sad too, you could see the scratches on the inside of the egg where it failed to pip externally. I'm just not going to look or help anymore. I'm going full blue from now on. It sucks to have the kids see the curled footed chicks scream and then finally die. ETA: I think the two had issues from the temp drops.

I love this!!
Oh man, I hope it passes quickly!! Feel better soon!![]()
