Chickens In Ya Window

I had to cull my first chick today. It was the egg that hatched the fastest, all by himself, but then was out of it for 2 days. I thought it's leg was a little splayed and I gave him lots of electrolytes and nutri-drench. He perked up long enough for me to notice he had a bum leg. Thanks to WV & Walnut, I was able to tell it was a slipped tendon but it wouldn't go back in place. I really tried for a few hours. Then he had a little discharge in his eyes and I knew he was just sickly. Not for breeding. But the other two chicks are chubby and healthy! And I have eggs looking good for this weekend!
Can I ask how much you can sell a rooster for at auction? Sorry to hear that SC. How are you doing today? :gig We have had luck with using a shop vac to get most the water out and then renting some drying fans. You have to drape the carpet up on something like a buckets or back of chairs and let it dry all the way out. Sorry to hear about the mixed up eggs Rossfam. Final update on my hatch last week. 12 hatched out of 14 good eggs. One did expire already. It pipped externally and then dried out so we helped it out. It had curled feet. It died a day later. So we have 11 new chicks on the ground. I need to get a good pic of the group. 6 yellow, 5 Marans chick color (one died) and 1 grey chick patterned like a Marans. Interesting. And a few of them have feathered shanks. Of the eggs left I did candle them and one had internally pipped. Sad too, you could see the scratches on the inside of the egg where it failed to pip externally. I'm just not going to look or help anymore. I'm going full blue from now on. It sucks to have the kids see the curled footed chicks scream and then finally die. ETA: I think the two had issues from the temp drops.
:highfive: Awesome hatch!!
Saw this on FB. I love ingenious ways of repurposing!
I love this!!
:gig :frow Hi everybody. The last 16 hours have been :hit, but I got an appointment this morning, got a refill, and now I'm all :D It's holding firm right at the entrance to the tunnel

don't cut the entry hole completely out . from the cut on the ground cut the two side cuts . and bend the flap for water shed . you may need to heat it a little. should make a nice ground nesting box . tell Jim to make sure he gets the hole plugs . try to find a pan as large as the barrel . that's why I said a large flower pot water pan .

Was gonna make the entrance holes up from bottom a few inches... thanks for the tip on the water sheild... probably would have forgotten that... yep, if they don't toss the bunghole caps he gets them... don't have a couple of them in the ones we have, but I can rig something, no biggie...

duct tape fixes anything gotta run.

Thanks guys. But that was my thinking too. Get it over with! I didn't want to start working with him/her and have it get older and worse and then have to do it. It was smaller then the others and very weak and getting picked on. I thought about what you said WV, about it gaining weight and the one leg not being able to support it. So I had to toughen up and do the deed. I think I'm officially a chicken keeper now! ;) Everyone have a great night!!

X 2. I haven't had to cull a small chick yet, but I'm sure I will some day. Glad you did the right thing.
