Chickens In Ya Window

Was it decided that the male will try to mate other younger males, as well as females?
Still a work in progress, but a few pics of my new coop/building. The center building is for food, straw, etc storage, and egg collection. Coop/run on the right is the older flock's side. It has an automatic door on the run, and they free-range. Left side will have a much larger run for the LO's, when I get them moved. They won't free-range for a while. Here's how far it is from the house. The tree half-way in between is where I saw Big Guy fight off the hay bale. We were in front of the new building. I will paint it all red with white trim, going to add some trim to the door, etc... looks crappy now, but I'll dress it up. (wow, pic looks crooked too, but its not that bad :D ) Directly under the coop is now covered with siding, and from the footer to the ground is covered with wire, so they can't get under the building. They will be able to get under the wall on the back of the building. Their feed and water will be mounted and hung "inside". We will access the food/water from inside the building. Haven't decided whether it will be a solid wall inside, with a door into the feed, or whether we will just use wire to separate the areas. Here's the group, after they went in last night. Currently their food and water hang under the coop, but they will have access to the "food/water cave" under the wall on the right. We haven't extended the run to go over there yet. The PVC sticking out on the right of this pic comes from a gutter on top of the building, but will eventually feed a barrel inside the building, and will supply PVC tube waterers inside. Nest boxes from inside the building This pic was taken before we completed the lid on the other nest box. The back section is the area that the chicks will have access too.
Wow, WV, it looks awesome!! Great job!!

And... no more whining. The tunnel is clear

Looks like a great setup WV. We are hoping to move in the spring and build out a permanent pen structure. Looks like it's on high ground. Your whole yard is beautiful.

Hope it passes soon.  I like pain meds - a lot. Although I can tolerate a lot of pain, why tough it out if you don't have to?

I rather tough it out!!!:lau

It'd be like making :love to a pellet gun

OMG!!!! :gig
She has been a saint. I always try to tough out colds, flu, etc... This has turned me into a big ol' baby, and she has been a fantastic nurse :thumbsup

Well that's sweet. All wives should do for their hubbys......especially when you are in that much pain.

Kinda hard to smack when he's making everybody feel so sorry for him, huh.

Right!!???? Did you see my post about compassion. And yet you still beat me up!

I had to cull my first chick today. It was the egg that hatched the fastest, all by himself, but then was out of it for 2 days. I thought it's leg was a little splayed and I gave him lots of electrolytes and nutri-drench. He perked up long enough for me to notice he had a bum leg. Thanks to WV & Walnut, I was able to tell it was a slipped tendon but it wouldn't go back in place. I really tried for a few hours. Then he had a little discharge in his eyes and I knew he was just sickly. Not for breeding. But the other two chicks are chubby and healthy! And I have eggs looking good for this weekend!
:highfive: Awesome hatch!!
I love this!!
Oh man, I hope it passes quickly!! Feel better soon!

:hugs. Oh no!!!

So sorry... :hugs

Looks like I'm gonna have to cull a chick too... the other Araucana chick has been having seizures since Sat... :(
Was gonna make the entrance holes up from bottom a few inches... thanks for the tip on the water sheild... probably would have forgotten that... yep, if they don't toss the bunghole caps he gets them... don't have a couple of them in the ones we have, but I can rig something, no biggie...

:hugs man...this sucks...

Sorry Ruby, that's tough, especially the first one. It's never easy, but you get to the point that you realize it's the right thing to do.

And... no more whining. The tunnel is clear :weee

Finally!!!! Now I don't have to feel compassion towards you anymore.

Right!!???? Did you see my post about compassion. And yet you still beat me up!

I beat you up for the intentional hug, not for the compassionate one. I let the compassionate one go, remember? He was soooo pitiful! That's why I let Friday's go too...

At least now we can all go back to smacking him.

"Looks crappy now but I'll dress it up..." are we looking at the same setup??? Dang, girl... that's nicer than the digs my birds got anyday... lol...

Haha, well thanks. I know its decent, I'm just anxious to get it all painted up real pretty. I'm considering painting "Big Guy and his Harem" on the wall!
big_smile.png

And the "they're just chickens" comment goes back to a conversation about really expensive hatching eggs! K was the one that said they're just chickens!!

So did you end up having to cull the chick or has it improved?

No improvement... it's fighting for all its worth, but staying same... :/ and can't get more eggs now either... so really bummed... and breeding program hinges on a single bird now, and I really don't like that... always should have at least 1 backup... :/
