Chicken's May Have Disease - Need Advice

We've been treating them all with 1.5 tsp to a gallon. I'm not sure, but if it is cocci wouldn't they all have the same strain? They all seemed to come down with it at the same time.

On another note, we've had them in one section of our garage/barn while we're finishing their actual coop, so I've been searching around to see if there's something they may have gotten into. Didn't find much except one thing that may or may not be significant. It's a bit nasty, but i keep a 2 or so gallon bucket partially filled with water as a mouse trap. Mice climb on the rim and more often than not fall in and that's the end of them. Well there were definitely several decomposing mice at the bottom and a lot of the water was missing. Even though it was in a section they typically never went to, I'm almost positive they must have drank some of the water (droppings around it). I have no idea what if any impact this would have on them, but I would guess they could get e-coli or some other bacterial infection (probably among other things). Don't know if this would change anyone's thought's, but maybe this caused similar symptoms to cocci, I have no clue. The rooster seems to get bursts of energy, where you'd almost think he was back to normal, but then he goes right back to being lethargic and seemingly very sleepy. I gave him some crumble mash mixed with the corid water and he was eating that up good. If anyone's had a similar experience with their chicken's drinking putrid water, please let me know what if any impact that had. Like I mentioned previously though, the hens bounced back pretty quickly after giving the Corid treatment. Sorry to keep this going so long, but at the same time that's what make's a thread of this kind useful for people in the future. I've seen so many that ask a question or two, a bunch of people reply and then nothing. It's nice to know the end result of issue/suggestions for future reference (at least I think so). Have a good night all.
Botulism would be about the only thing drinking that tainted water might cause. Here is a link: http://www.thepoultrysite.com/diseaseinfo/19/botulism

Would the sample need to be on a certain material and a specific amount? I'm sure they'll let me know, but can't hurt to be prepared.

It would be best to ask them.

So I had a fecal float and smear test done. The vet said that the only thing he saw was one possible egg and he gave me some liquid Baytril to try. It was $20 for the float, $20 for the smear and $15 for the Baytril. He said he saw nothing to indicate cocci, but I am on day 6 of the Corid, so maybe that issue is just about taken care of. I asked him if it was ok to start the Baytril while he was still on the Corid and he said it should be fine. I'm not to assured by "should" however. Does anyone know for sure if this is ok to do? His condition is pretty much the same, though his poo is getting more normal looking and I noticed he's slightly shivering occasionally. I saw this was happening right after one of the hens pecked at him, so maybe it related, I don't know. We do have a heating light going, but I'm tempted to bring him in (we live in the northeast). By the way, the vet does not typically deal with farm animals.

Slow down... most small animal vets don't have 10% Baytril, they have 2.27%. How much does he weigh? What does your Baytril bottle say?

Casportpony has used Baytril a lot on her chickens. It is usually not prescribed for chickens since an FDA ban on it's use since 2005, but a lot of BYCers still use it. How much does your chicken weigh?

My vet told me to give .2ml (20mg) per 2.2 pounds once a day for 5 days. If you have the 2.27% stuff 20mg is 4-5 times more liquid. Make sense?

10% Baytril - .2ml = 20mg
5% Baytril - .2ml = 10mg
2.27% Baytril - .2ml = 4.54mg

If you're bottle doesn't say something like 10%, 5%, 2.27%, 100mg/ml, 50mg/ml or 22.7mg/ml, call your vet and ask:

•What is the strength of my Baytril?
•How many mg per kg did you prescribe?
•How much did my bird weigh?

The dosing info from the link you mentioned is for a 5 pound bird and the 10% solution. This is why it's so important for people think about medicating in terms of mg per kg or mg per pounds. All oral and injectable medicine is supposed to be given by weight.

I decided to hold off one more day to finish out the Corid treatment. Well the Corid combined with a little prayer must have did the trick, because on day 7 we woke to find him wide awake and very close to his usual self. Rather than starting additional treatments we've now just added some vitamin/electrolytes to their water. Day 10 now and all seems well, thank God! The only thing I just noticed about the rooster is a bulge on the left side of his breast (if he was facing you), which I assume is just his crop, but do they usually sit off centered like that? Can't thank you all enough for your help, we really appreciate the time each of you took to respond. May your chicken's be happy, healthy and eggs abound! God Bless.
