Hi Mark! OK, sounds like I was heading in the right diorection then. I think if it gets way too cold for more than a few nights I would be tempted to put an 85 watt red light in with them, but know what you mean about not wanting them to get dependant on it. Thanks!

Yes goodluck winter is definitely alot more of a chore than summer. I HATE going out and changing waterers a few times a day. I was thinking after are your seramas bigger? I know i read somewhere that they cant stand the cold. Not sure though, shay how does yours do? I had old english for years and the cold never bothered them and there close in size too....

The only ones I would worry about are the modern games they are a tight feathered breed that are not really suited to New England weather and chill and die really easy .Alot of people I know including myself bring them in the house for the winter

Last year I let the moderns in the coop with the free rangers and they did fine, it was the seramas that I had trouble with. The moderns are dubbed so I also did not have to worry about their combs. I actually read a thread that the person dubbed all their roos because of frostbite. I am fortunate that all my roos will huddle together with the exception of the bully cochin bantam roo! He really is sweet, just picks on certain other roos. I made the mistake of taking the seramas inside last year and vowed never again after the dust cleanup that took months to get rid of! LOL
ETA: this year I was curious as to the size of the coop vs the number of birds because last year the moderns were in the dog house coop and that is a much smaller space for them to be able to cuddle and stay warm, plus I had put in about a foot of shavings becasue the breeder I got them from said they need deep bedding for the long legs!

Hi, Mark.
we will be doing heat in our big coop, but they also wont be free ranging to, mark is right though, if you have heated coop keep th ebirds cooped in, becouse if they free rang, from heated out to below or 20, that can hurt there immune system and weakin it.
so far no heat on any one, and i lost 1 silkie adult the other day.
i lost 3 oegb,
my silkies and d'uccle will be cooped in for the winter, they are in the big coop with soon to be heated.

my polish last year did great with no heat, and my frizzle and cochin bantams too.
but this year becouse i want to pay more attion on my showing, i am bring in and cooping my Potenal SQ inside the bigger coop with heat becouse i dont want issues to frost bite. and my cochins will have a light in there coop to keep the temp at a normal that frost bite and freezing water wont accure.
egg layers just a light on there water, ducks ( this is my first year of winter with adults ducks and geese) and Tipy yesterday my double crested duck was not doing so well at all, so he and the rest of the ducks i took out of the geese pen put them in a seperated pen and coop them in another smaller coop with no wind getting in, i think they will be fine.

If you heat your coop and for some reason you loss power for a while, your birds will most likely die.Birds will climitize to your weather. This is why they molt, they grow in feathers that will keep them safe in the winter months. If you heat their coop, they do not have the proper insulation to weather the cold. It's best jsut to have a barn that they can get into for the night and let them free range or however you keep them.If you cage them, have a place where they can get out of the drafts.

There is the serama roo out there and he is a class A, but I am trying to think who the mom could be? Are the legs long like the modern games because I have that hen that was laying when I got her but she has since stopped. I am aslo having a hard time with one of those OEGB's we got. She is just sitting all puffed up and is very weak. I noticed the 3 of them would not go out of the coop ever and I am wondering if she did not eat enough even though I was putting feed in the coop. Today was the first time when I let everyone out that 2 of them actually ran out and ate, but she stayed in . I also noticed their beaks need to be trimmed so I am going back out witht he clippers to trim beaks.
