swooping down at you and the dogs, i wonder if something is wrong with it.

Yes, there is something wrong with it alright, it has lost all fear of people because there are so many of them now that they are competing for food, plus it must have bouncing balls the size of a watermelon. I am placing another call to F&G, they wee suppose to get back to me last time, but now with all my pictures of my killed chickens they may do something. I have taken all the right precautions to try and make them stay way and instead it seems like he comes around even more! Are you seeing a lot of them in your place. I would think you would because you have a bigger open space and mine is more heavily treed where the chickens are.

Did you get some red/silver reflective tape? Wildlife Services mailed us some for free back in the summer. I asked hubby how he got it...... He said he called NH Fish and Game in Concord, and complained about the hawk killing our duck and coming back again for more. F&G gave us a number to call for Wildlife Services---you might want to just ask them to get you in touch with Wildlife Services (we don't have a number for it anymore). Hubby then talked to a guy in Wildlife Services (it's a federal agency, not a state one, because hawks are protected under federal law)---this guy offered us the reflective tape and told us to string it across the yard several times to deter hawks. He said it works because the tape reflects light into the hawks' eyes and disrupts their abilty to focus and dive in for the kill. You can also use cheap DVDs or CD disks, hang them with fishing line around your yard and on your coop/run, etc, and they do the same thing, plus they look like big eyes.

We've been lucky---after we put the tape and DVD disks up, we have not had any hawk trouble. You mentioned you have a lot of trees around your yard--- would you consider cutting some down to make it less attractive to the hawks? I'm trying to think of anything that might help. I am sure you are SO frustrated by now!!!

Wanna borrow my Mastiff she hates hawks and grabbed and killed 2 as they flew down at my chickens 2 years ago.I wonder if its illegal for my dog to kill them if they are in her pen

Hi Abby, I got the tape and I have CD's haning on the sides of the run, and also have them on the top of the netting with the reflecting side up and also along the corral fence posts in the yard. This hawk just glares at me and then will take off and swoop at me. I think it is the same one that hit me in the face this past fall with his wing and made a red mark on my face. Gee, we can shoot a tresspasser in self defense, but not a darn bird! Geesh, what is wrong with this country!

I read a post here some time ago about a persons dog killing a hawk in the pen, but don't remember what became of it. Do a search on here to see what the outcome was. I may have to take you up on that one though!

I would leave them locked in the coup. As long as food is available he is going no where.

after a week or so he will get the message.

I had one that got one of my Roos last year . after that I locked everyone inside. the hawk was back everyday for a while,I guess he got hungry because, then I never saw him again.

A month ago I picked up a LF barred rock pullet. She is my only LF bird and yesterday laid an egg for me, the moderns laid me 2 eggs also yesterday. Yay!! I hope this means that egg production is starting. Does someone have that link to the site that will tell you the colors you get when 2 colors breed. I had the birchen roo mate with the brown/red hen. I think the breeder had told me I could get either color from them if they mated, but not sure. Oh and that LF egg is so huge compared to my little modern and cochin banty eggs!
