I may be bringing one or a few blue Showgirl cockerels and maybe a blue Silkie or two. The swap will be good timing- I should be able to tell for certain the boys from the girls.
I also have one lone 2 year old speckled sussex hen, still laying nearly every day. She's savvy. I sold my small layer flock recently to make way from my 11 young black star pullets (got at the Litchfield Chickenstock
) but this one hen somehow flew out of the coop, despite flight netting over the outside pen! And she's FAST. LOL! So I couldn't catch her. She's been living by herself with our Langshan roo ever since. But my pullets are ready to move from the chicken tractor to the pen, and I'm thinking she's going to really pick on them.
Can't promise I'll be going- depends on how well I'm doing with my classes- lately I haven't had time to do anything fun!!! studystudystudyhomeworkstudy
(in case anyone's wondering, those smooth feathered kids are Langshan X Speckled Sussex - destined for our freezer)
Sorry for your predator problems, guys- that spash cochin was beautiful! I just lost my blue roo, the sire of many of my lovely babies, last week. At first I thought it was a bird of prey- but now I'm pretty certain it was either a fox or a fisher. I found a small hole in the fence with blue feather stuck to it, where the critter pulled him through.
I put the electric Premier 1 sheep fencing back up around the coop and hooked it to the horse fencing- which is on a charger that would knock down a moose! Take that, you vermin!!!
