Chickie loving pet hay??

I have to speak up here as I think you are putting your chickies unnecessarily at risk encouraging them to eat the hay... the risk is CROP PROBLEMS.
Sour Crop is often the result of grass clippings...straw or hay clogging up the crop and even if you do give grit , it still happens and is life threatening. Your choice, but in my honest opinion it is not the right thing to do.

I feed my older chickens the leftover bits at the bottom of the feed bin. The seeds and hay grain they just love it, and according to storey's chicken book is okay to feed. I would not think that regualar hay would be okay though since it is so dry. Wow carri, 15.00 for a bale of hay i sympathize with you. Here in pa i pay 2.50 for a 40lb bale of alfalfa/timothy mix for my horses from my neighbor who sells me hay. I would go broke for sure at those prices because i really have 3 hay burners here!
