Chicks dying

Thanks coolmind. I just went down to the co-op and the chicken "guru" there recommended duramycin-10. I'll let you all know how it turns out.

Give the antibiotic a little time to work, it is not immediate. Also, can you find Sav a Chick vitamins in a nearby feed store, or a similar vitamin you put into the water supply for them? Apple Cider Vinegar is a great health booster, too, 1 tablespoon per gallon of water is a moderate dose. They love the taste and it really helps them through unhealthy times.

I know it is probably waay too early to tell but copperhead (the one that was having breathing trouble) seems to be doing better. It is eating, scratching, drinking and fairly active. Now one of the other ones is very lethargic but shows no signs of having difficulty breathing. I just don't know what in the heck is going on.

Can you mix probiotics and/or electrolytes along with the Duramycin-10?

I gave mine duramycin in one container and electrolytes in another and they are drinking from both. They seem to be better but we'll see tomorrow morning ill keep my finger cross hopefully this will help them.

Have you considered Coccidia? I've had 5 infected with it. Same symptoms as your chicks. The 5th one was the only one i had meds for and she is alive and fine.

I've only noticed a couple of bloody stools and none today. There were a couple of green stools though. None of the chicks are eating or drinking much. None of them seem to be having trouble breathing today though. I'm just not sure what the heck they have.

If you are seeing ANY bloody stools in chicks this age you need to treat for coccidiosis asap! It is probably one of the most common things chicks this age will come down with. You've had bloody stools, multiple deaths, lethargic chicks and chicks not wanting to eat or drink. Treat them for cocci! Chicks can have coccidiosis and not show any bloody stool at all and by the time they do show blood they are very, very sick.

At this young age it is unlikely they are sick with a respiratory disease unless they have been exposed to older birds. Get the Corid and treat them. I keep Corid on hand when raising chicks and if I see any chicks lethargic and not wanting to eat or drink they get treated, all of them, I"ve saved many a chick that way. You really have to at least rule it out because it moves so fast and it is lethal, there isn't time to wonder if it's this, that or something else.
