I candled last night..13 out of 13 are viable! New Hampshires I found on e-bay. She's been breeding them for a while..so, I'm excited to have some good laying hens by spring, because if I remember correctly, they lay early, and often. Wonder how long their laying life is, since they do lay early and often. Guess I'll see.

yeap there sure Dark Brahams on the auction right now.. But i really would like to have close to 2 dozen to put in the bator due to shipping and of course incubation. you know how those things can be... amybe Ican make a deal this spring with someone when their egg production picks up...after getting the dark brahams I will have the 3 breeds the boys and I have been wanting... the marans fbcms and blues, ameracaunas and the dark brahmas...my cousin is trying to talk me into hatching out some barred rocks.. great layers but he doesnt want to take all the peeps I hatch..need to fill up 1 tray...idk..Having a hard time staying away from the bator...really would love to candle a couple days early so i can put them in the new bator...

does anyone else have egg/chicken dreams? last night i had a dream that i was candling a cracked egg that had masking tape on it (i dont even have any of those thankfully) and while holding it it cracked more so i was running around the house looking for tape and the whole time the egg is just falling apart so i put it in a tupperware container and put it back in the incubator.
it was not good, i woke up in a cranky mood.

I am sure i must dream about chickens, but rarely remember it . That does sound like a distressing dream. Soon I will be getting those eggs out and candling! Anyone else? Deb

Oh gosh, I had many waitress jobs when I was younger. Food service is no fun. Glad I don't do that any more. I just dish up feed for goats and chickens now. The tips are good, lots of manure for my garden.

Well, I am down to 4 eggs. I candled again last night, and pulled all the clears. I had 5 that weren't fertile, I had suspected that was the case.

The good news is that 3 of the of the 4 cochin eggs are going strong!!

I am actually really happy with the small number. I don't mind having just a few bantams in the house for a long time. I just don't plan to hatch again until closer to spring. (Really! I'm gonna wait, I mean it!)
