Chicks kicking shavings into the water

@truchickendiva this is what I did for my chicks to avoid this, it worked wonders! And the bigger and flappier they get the messier the water dish will get. This was an easy fix. Rubbermaid container, a small section of hardware mesh, a couple piece of wood and some duct tape to cover sharp edges!
(I can’t take credit for this idea, I stole it from a YouTube video from Guildbrook Farms)
thanks so much!!! I will give this a try!

And if I did use nipple waterers, do you guys prefer vertical or horizontal?

Horizontal.

Vertical ones you have to hang and once in the run they freeze and bust before horizontal ones.

we brooded our chicks in a stock tank and my husband drilled a hole in the top of the waterer, attached an eyehook and chain and hung it from a rod going across the top of the tank. as the chicks got bigger we could raise the waterer. it worked to keep the shavings and poop out.

Horizontal

Mine when they were like 2 weeks started hitting the hamster waterer I had mounted on the side of the brooder and now use the big chicken horizontal nipples sitting on a cinderblock.

Following. All of this sounds like good advice. I feel like every time I go out I’m cleaning shavings out of the water!
