I had a paint silkie chick had two days ago and she was born with spraddle leg. No biggie. I put her legs together so that they would fix but it looks to be another problem. Her legs are facing outward and idk if that is fixable. If anyone has any tips to help me please lmk!

Hi,

By now you probably took the brace off, and her feet should be normal now?

They sort of always do that when we bind their legs, and a couple of days later, they're fine. This one had a disjointed hip so that's why our bindings are a little wider than usual.

This one is around 4 months old now and you'd never know the difference.

That’s good that yours healed! Unfortunately mine passed away the day after this post. She wasn’t eating much and I had a good look at her legs they were really pointed outward and her hocks were swollen. I just put her back in the incubator with a soft towel and she passed in the morning

I'm very sorry. :hugs

I do that too, put them back in the incubator for 12/24 hours, but right away after hatch.

I've had this happen with my buff line, and about 1/15 will hatch with splayed legs. I observe them closely after placing them in the brooder, and any that look even slightly splayed are returned to the incubator. That'll fix about half of them. Bindings and B-complex work for the rest, and in about two days they're fine, except this one. This one took over two weeks, but like I said, she's fine. Just explaining in case you ever have this again. Again, sorry you lost that one.

yeah i put her in the incubator right away again after hatching and wrapping her legs with vet wrap. But I noticed it was more than just splay leg. She has injuries on each hock, bowed legs, and hocks are also severely swollen on the sides. Thank you tho for the help. Just wrong timing :(

One leg would jut out, so sort of like splayed, except the one leg had a mind of its own. And it lay splat out flat on the ground. So one good leg, one bad one. Splayed are when they're both just spread out and not straight up and down.

When we did the usual treatment for splayed legs, which was band them, then every 12 to 24 hours take off for an hour, and reband, that was doing nothing. Splayed legs would have been showing improvement and fixed by the 2nd day. A week of this, and no change. So, we didn't take them off for a week. Then, it finally fixed her. We gave B-complex daily as well as therapy.

thats good to know i bought a chick that was born like that but i was given her at two weeks already so i dont think she was fixable. I tried by hardest on her but she eventually passed away. The more i know, the more chances i have to prevent chicks from living a life like that
