The chicks, now eight weeks old , and the dog a Beagle have met with the run fencing between them. There was allot of barking at first but as time has gone on it has diminished and he seemed to have lost interest. I decided that today they would meet face to face. Early this morning while they were free ranging the yard I let the dog out. He walked out and looked the the Chick for a few seconds then acted like he was going to charge. I told him to go back in the house and he complied. Later in the day I decided to try again. I let the chickens out of the run and called the dog outside, He came out, looked around seemingly with little interest in the chickens. Then he slowly started walking in their direction. He walked up to one of the chicks which was separated from the rest of the flock. They look at each other and start slowly approaching as if in an old west gunfight. Then it happened, all of a sudden the whole flocks runs and flys towards the dog. It was over in an instant, the dog runs to the deck chicks following, he turns around and looks at them then runs in the house. He came back out several more times in the day but wants nothing to do with that angry mob of chicks.

That was not the outcome I was expecting!
Heh Heh! I have a bird dog that I haven't been brave enough to 'introduce' yet. I just don't trust her that much, she is way to interested in birds!

That had a much better Ending than I Feared ; ) Thanks for shareing I guess its gonna take a bit more time .. I have a free range YArd.. It took my critters a while to figure out their boundries .. A Couple aggressive Chickens even took a little hop in the Air when they thought they would take charge over the Goats ..

BE CAREFUL. I would strongly recommend having had the dog leashed for that encounter, because one snap and you've got a dead chicken and a dog that doesn't think he did anything wrong on your hands. If the chicks had decided to run away from him, it wouldn't have been surprising if he would have gone off in pursuit, thinking it's a game. Again, one snap and you're out a bird.

I can only trust one of my dogs, the other two would definitely have a snack

That is so funny! I wish my chickens would do that. My sisters dog has alreay gotten and killed one of my chickens. He is not that big, and the chicken was pretty small when he got her (had laid her first egg just days before). Now I think my adult chickens are too big. he can still scare them, but hasn't even attempted to hurt them (they'll come over and try to eat his food, he know that if he just runs over there they'll all run. Although, when they don't, he doesn't know what to do about them eating his food!). What I'm worried about is my (almost) 4 week old chicks. I'm hoping to have a better run made by the time they are old enough to live outside. Right now, we are renting a house, and useing what they used for their two dogs. It doesn't have a top on it, so my chicken gets out every morning. I haven't really tried anything to get her to stay in, because I have a little nest made out of the coop that she uses (took a while to actually get her to use it, she laid one egg in it, then I guess she decided she didn't like it. Then about a month later, my little sister found 4 eggs in the nest and she has been laying there ever since) I'm kind of afraid that she'll find another way to hide her eggs. Sorry way off topic. Anyways, that is so funny!

After my dominant rooster bowled my former chicken killing miniature dachshund completely over by leaping, screaming, into the air and landing with both feet in the middle of the dog's side, there was never a problem with Zorro again. He will slink through the flock, tail tucked under his belly, to get to me if I am sitting outside somewhere watching the flock. He gets into my lap and goes to sleep, if I let him.

The other dog, Dooley, also a mini-doxie but a bit larger and much younger, barks at any chicken which tries to get into the house, but that's the extent of his "aggression.". He saw me working to break Zorro of terrorizing the chickens (and killing three youngsters by chasing, cornering, and shaking them) and Dooley didn't want Momma to ever be that unhappy with HIM.

I've also added a pair og geese to the flock, and those two will herd the dogs by nipping them as they pass.... They protect the flock quite well.

I was standing there by them when it all went down. His tail was wagging and I've had him for about 8 tears so I can tell his mood pretty well or it never would have happened. I think if he had gotten close enough to have sniffed the chick he would have gotten over his curiosity. Went in the house a few minutes later and he was laying there with his ego crushed.

Ah, those prehistoric genetic memories do come in handy....Enjoyed the story.
