Lucy studied him in return, not saying anything, just thinking. After all her complaints earlier, why was he still here with her? she wondered. Yeah, he said he didn't want to leave without her, but he knew next to nothing about her—and she aimed to keep it that way. She knew little enough about herself, anyway. She broke the gaze and scooted further down so she could fully look up at the branches and blue sky above. "If you went, then what would you do? Where would you go? Things cost money, so I've been told, and unless you have a secret safe in your room, you're about as broke as I am."
Victor looked at her, responding “I would work.” He gazed into her eyes, searching her throughout. He yearned to see feelings, feelings towards him, even an ounce. Just an ounce was all he needed, and her eyes told stories of what raged within. He saw storms of anger, fear, doubt, trying to find a soft spot of possible affection.
