Children + chickens...advice from a parent please.

Disease should not be an issue, so long as you don't let this happen....

Guess what is in his mouth?

Seriously though, wash hands before and after, don't let them eat poo, and keep outsde shoes outside. You should be fine.

It looks to me like you are a new parent, or even a contemplating new parent. With that said I will start with saying I know at this time in your present frame of mind, this comment is completely useless. Because you are going to worry. You are going to spend hours and hours in agony over needless worries. But they will begin to fade the first time you find you 9 month old eating out of the litter box. So for this very moment I realize my advice is useless. So print it, save it, and one day you will come across it and then, and only then will the true wisdom of my words be evident. Children are not nearly as fragile as we think they are. Puppies and kittens and feathery little birds are the very things to have for children.

My kids both ate rocks and dirt way before we had chickens..

Use some good sense and keep your chickens healthy and your children will be healthy too.

Fresh air, sunshine, bare feet, grass, and love are the best ingredients for a healthy childhood!

They'll catch lots more from other kids and from chewing the handles on the grocery carts than they'll ever catch from chickens, cats, dogs, whatever!

Or the first time some random kid at the playground hands your child their already partially chewed cookie and your kid just pops in their mouth!

I don't mean a cookie with a bite out I mean a partially chewed cookie!!

Or the great aunt with the gigantic herpes sore on her lip wants to kiss your newborn! Eeeeek! That one was a serious no-go!

Penturner is right. You are going to worry it comes with the territory.

well I have a boat load of children, and my first, well I was a fanatic about everything. You grow out of it. Hey this is our 7th and I pretty much just let the broody hens raise her

Any future children you have will be fine... and probably better off being raised around chickens. Kids can learn a lot from watching and helping take care of animals. I always have mine wash their hands when they are done and everyone is fine. Even the neighbor kids, nephews, and friends kids enjoy my girls.
