Chinese New Year Hatch/February 3 2011

I think one fan should keep things stirred up. Windows just always cause a little of a cooler spot. The best way is to spot check with the same thermometer. Put it in one place and leave it until it stabilizes, then without changing anything else, put it in another spot until it stabilizes. depending on your incubator how long to leave it. This way you are comparing apples to apples. This way you will know if you have any hot or cold spots and can adjust your plans accordingly. If you add another fan, I like to put them where they don't blow directly on the eggs.

Good morning:D
I do not have a lot o say, just wanted to check in to help keep the thread going.
I have lovley babies.................
Blrw's and ee's from Christmas.............Bcm cross and slw's from nyd hatch.
I just love those little buggers........................
Am learning my new computer and will start practicing photo's soon.
Have egg's coming from Newlyweds but not mailed till the 17th.............
Guess I alresdy said I will have to use some of my own mixes for this hatch.
My checking account and credit card was hit so cannot order eggs until I get this mess fixed.
I had ordered on line from PAY PAL and Costco.
The bank suggested I set up 2 checking accounts..one soley for ordering on line with only the amount of money to cover the purchase.
Sure is a pain to have this happen.
My daughter in law had the same problem after ordering from Costco last year.
Oh,
I do have one more thing.
My BLM has started to lay again and is giving me the darkest eggs I have ever seen..
She is a good girl...)
Could be a coincedence................
Hope all is well wih everyone

Wolftracks have you tried to see if you can synchornize your thermometer or hygrometer ....We use the Radio shack indoor /outdoor thermometers. Even they go out with use. I try to remember to change the batter with every hatch! Nancy

My husband used to keep me stocked up on batteries. I stopped buying them a few years ago, because Bill always made sure I had them.

hmmmm I'm out and haven't been shopping sooooooo I think I should check and see what I have and what I have to replace..

I forgot to check the darn battery! What a moron.

Have to shop anyway. I ran out of lamp to steel light bulbs from, so guess I need to do that too. Light bulbs were my job to supply.

Mind is gone these days.

Big party later today. Hope I make it through it. I haven't even figured out what I have to wear!

Old age is kickin my behind.

Darling my brain is kicking me too!!! I used the word synchronize I meant to say Calibrate:

Okay here are some resources....You'll be amazed at the difference you might find!!! I was. And now I'm looking for a hygrometer that has a screw on back that I can actually calibrate by moving that as well as a similar thermometer. rather than having to put stickies on all the different thermometers as to how many degrees off they are or percentage of humidity they err by!!! As we know that can make a critical difference.

OK.
References are :

(with this I use a highly accurate cooking thermometer that hubby had in his chef days alongside my other thermometers I'm calibrating)

next for hygrometer:

Hope this helps!

Have a blessed day. Nancy

I calibrate mine the same way. I'm wondering if my house is too humid.

Thing is I get both shrink wrapped and drowned chicks and have no idea why.

My main problem is still the Post Office. I really thing they have a kick the box team there or something. Or maybe they have bumper cars and toss the baxes it to play bumper soccor or something. I'm so tired of damaged eggs. Seems like some show up and great hatches, some so so hatches and so many no hatches. Just gets frustrating sometimes.

Anyway, I'll be calibrating these darn things again tomorrow and I hope the eggs that I'm supposed to get show up. I'm also thinking I may go to TJs and pick a dozen up from them just to see if it makes a difference how they're shipped. I know the PO doesn't care about them.

My main problem has always been my digital hygrometers blank out on me about the time they finally get up about where I want them.. I finally ponied up and bought a nice thermometet/hydrometer combo (big) and was able to check my set up and the humidity was at 85%. That might be where some of my hatch issues have been coming from. This is in a small foam incubator I use for a hatcher. So I am going to play with it a lttle bit and get things right. Once I get the formula for what size container to use for my water source to get the humidity I need, I don't monitor it that closely. Next project will be getting a window installed in my old wood GQF cabinet so I can see what's going on. It almost drove me crazy not being able to watch the progress in there for the NYD hatch.

Wolftracks, your eggs are on their way except...well....
I sent 14: 7 FBCM, 3 blue marans, 3 arcauna/FBCM= olive eggers
Problem is that only equals 13....so, there may be 4 blue marans, or 4 arcaunas....lol I forget!

OH WOW I didn't know there would be blues. I don't have any of those. That would be soooo cool! I sent you a pm.

I sure hope this hatch goes better than the last. I've been a good girl and not set any eggs in the meantime either. LOL That's hard for me. hehehe

Wolftracks,
I had the same problem last hatch. some shrink wrapped and some with fluid in the eggs.
Makes me crazy trying to make sense out of it????????????

Yeah it makes me nuts. I've had this happen before too.

OK I have new batteries in the thermo/hygroms and I'm calibrating them today.

It's so humid from first all the rain, then the fog and now just cold and gloomy. I'm wondering if I should even pput water in the bators. I know some people don't, but never done it that way. Closest I came to that was staggered hatches and I added eggs but no water.

All I know is I want whatever I set to hatch!

My last hatch was Dec6 and I got 4 BOs. One didn't make it and before that I hatched out 2 Lav and 2 Silvers and one of the Silvers didn't make it.

I'd like to get some chickss that I really want to keep. FBCMs and AMs right now.

I'm hoping to build up my Fabs with the trio I have, but they haven't started laying yet.

OH and I lost my bantam Wellie roo, so now I have the pullets and no ro and lost my Pene hen and have only a roo. This suck!

Come on daylight. Momma needs some eggs to hatch.
