Wolftracks, I wish someone would reply for you.

I am a research addict and I have been doing searches on google and on here for you to try and find some info to share with you. I don't know the answer, but I am trying to help you find the answer. It gives me something to do.

I hate using cartons for hatching. Just have never had more than 4 or 5 chicks hatch that way, but maybe I need to do it, so they don't drown???

From what I am finding, small aircells do increase their chance of drowning in the shell, so maybe the egg cartons would be a good idea. Maybe try that and keep your humidity around 60% to 65% for hatching. I am certainly no expert, but if I were in your position that is what I would do. I don't want to give you wrong info though because I really want you to have something hatch!!! Ughhh I wish we had a hatching pro that would respond to your question.

Well, I am in lockdown.. I candled with a better light and dumped some more that never started.. Did have 3 quitters.. egtopsied ... little chicks, huge yolk.. my guess is day 10-14?? So I have 38 left in lockdown.. out of 72.. a couple of these were iffy but I'm hoping...

I need a better source of eggs at least the price was right...

I just lockdown 16 Blue Splash Marans eggs. Eggs are large and dark, color a solid 6, darkest I have seen.
2 of the 14 look a little iffy, but the shell is so dark, you can't see much, except the egg cells.

I did the first 18 days in an Brinsea ECO. The auto turner went screwy for a few days.
It got stuck for 12 hours and I hand turned them for a few days before I got it to operate again.
Humidity was 30% or so. I fill one trough and check it every few days and top it off.
The Brinsea's temp stay rock steady and the humidity s good enough.

I do stagger hatches so I move the eggs into a Hovabator Genesis for lockdown.
I am dialing the humidity now. I start at 55% and raise it over the next 3 days.
I actually use a temp/humidity gauge that I got from a cigar store. Works fine.
