Chipmunk in run/coop ASKS

When I bought my house, the previous owners had so many chickens they were using the greenhouse as a second coop. They left it 4" deep in chicken feed. As a result we had the WORST outdoor mouse problem imaginable! After trying every trap on the market for a year we went for the only thing we hadn't tried...outdoor cats. I got a pair from a friend with a farm. They lived in her free ranging chicken coop so the cats are great with chickens.

We have had them for 5 months now and have only seen 1 mouse (that they weren't eating) since then. One cat brought home a 5 week old red tree squirrel (they are the size and personality of a chipmunk). We took it away from the cat uninjured and gave it to the local wildlife preserve. It was crawling in fleas! Ironically, everyone born and raised here will tell you we do not have flees in the area (100mi from Alaska), but this squirrel definitely had fleas. Read some scientific papers and discovered that even here there are 5 known flea species on wild rodents. So I would not be so sure your chickens are safe from parasites if there are rodents visiting them. I recommend getting a mousing cat (something I never imagined myself doing but am soooooo glad I did).

I studied then built to "Fort Knox" standard; or so I thought.

Recently lost 3 hens to a raccoon that found a weak corner; found and fixed.

I now have a chipmunk feasting in/out of my coop (through pop door from run) in front of my face.

Do they carry Northern Fowl or other mites?

How do I get rid of the little f*****?
My chickens hunt and eat mice . will your chickens not chase them out?

Geez.
My little guy who lives around my flock is so useful.

I’m sorry to hear you lost 3 hens to a raccoon. Chipmunks find an opening but they also tunnel. Try to find the munk’s access to the coop. After that I would lure the munk(s) away from the coop and trap it where the chicken’s don’t have access. The munks will smell the food in the trap and you could also remove the chicken feed for a short time. My dog got one chipmunk but there were many and BTW my chickens showed me where the chipmunk’s were entering because the chickens reenacted the crime while sqawking alerts. They used to run away from the chipmunks but they protect their food source now. I think cayene pepper will disturb the munk and not affect the chickens but research cayene first.
