Choosing Breeds!

It's February and chick season is fast approaching! I've been stuck on what breeds I want to get, so I was wondering what you guys thought. Why did you recommend the breed that you did? Is there a special chicken that made you love the breed? Please tell me all about it! I'd love to listen!

So I have a flock of 11 and I get 4 eggs a day and 2 are roosters 1 doesn't lay and three will in the mid spring but they are all sweet with the exception of my very protective rooster but he keeps them alive and away from hawks if you want to know the breeds I've got then you can quote this unless your not interested

I am looking for especially kind birds as pets, but egg production is also somewhat important.

Orpingtons are really docile & sweet personalities, I have 4 BOs that have been laying 3.5 a day. Wyandotte are good layers, easy to manage/handle although some say they are bossy. I had laying 5 Blue Wyandottes for a few months before they went back to their owner, they laid about 3 per day. Silkies, I've heard make great pets, go broody but not great layers. I'm partial to Orpingtons, Wyandottes & AM/EEs

My easter Eggers and orpington hens are good egg producers and are very nice, they sometimes come in the house! Silkies are good pets but not good egg producers.

May I suggest Buff Orpingtons, the 'golden retrievers' of the poultry world...extremely tame, good egg producers and gorgeously fluffy!

My Orpingtons are very sweet. My grandchildren carry them around like a puppy. My only problem with them is they tend to go broody. But, generally are good egg layers.
