Christian Topic: Bible Translations - which do you like?

Great question. I like to read different versions, depending on my mental outlook at the time. NIV when I'm overwhelmed and need good food right now, like an instant IV right to my spirit. When I'm doing pretty good its the New King James. And when I'm feeling very fit I pull out the New American Standard (NAS) Scofield Study Edition. A veritable feast. But truly the most important part for me is any red letter edition. Nothing like reading what Jesus Himself said when you really need uplifting and clarity.

***KJV *** I like to use a Strong's concordance, Matthew Henry commentary, and some Bible CD's that make looking up scriptures and references much faster.

Hey, this may be off topic, but recently the Rev. and I saw minister who was learning the entire Bible by heart...I'm not talking chapters...we've been able to do that since children...I'm talking the WHOLE bible! He nearly has the New Testament (KJV) down.
Oh, I saw him on youtube....you can check it out...don't remember the link...well, I found him...here's a long story...

I was looking up nativity floats (our Christmas Parade is Monday night) and I wanted ideas...so typed that in...came across a youtube connect..it was
Deland Bible Baptist church, in Florida. Then watched their parade float...which was awesome by the way, and then on the screen available was this minister.
So, hope that helps...found it very interesting.

New KJV; ASV;

It's interesting some words (because of persecution) were never translated but brought into english language as is. Baptismo which means immersion is never translated but converted into the word baptism.

Another problem w/some translations is the meaning of english words, has changed over the years altho God's word hasn't.

To easily compare texts, esword gives away a program to do that.

Glad to see all of you KJVers out there! For me it's my KJV 1611 Authorized version of the Bible. It is one of my pet peeves to hear the incorrect english grammer in all of the other versions!! When someone reads out of another version, it literally pains me! I also really have a hard time when someone reads the story of Daniel in the lion's den, where it talks about the king recognizing that the 4th person in the den was as the son of God-capital G, indicating that he realized that there was a difference, he KNEW it was the son of God, and not just another pagan god! ALL of the other translations say sons of the gods-little g, meaning ANY god, not the God of the Bible. Or another favorite of mine is in Mark 10:24
the KJV reads: And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and sayeth unto them, children, how hard it is for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! To my knowledge, all of the other versions leave out "them that trust in riches" and just say "how hard it is to enter into the kingdom of God". Because salvation is a free gift, would you call that hard to enter the kingdom of heaven? It is true though, that just as the KJV says, it is hard for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of heaven, because they are doing just that, trusting in riches rather than a God who saves.

It is also known that the KJV is written in a 5th grade reading level, so that it can be easily understood, where a version such as the NIV has many longer words with more syllables than the KJV, making the NIV reading level at the 8th grade! I have read many words in the NIV or other versions that are extremely long and confusing, when the KJV uses a much smaller, easier to understand word. I use my good old 1828 dictionary if there is something I don't understand-it is amazing how much our english language has been corrupted through the years!!

This is why I trust in and LOVE my good old KJV. A trusted version of the Bible since 1611!

I prefer the NIV, but also have been known to reference The Message to get a more modern perspective. We used the KJV when I was a kid and I do enjoy the language, but I am a language nerd. I think sometimes it is a barrier to people's understanding. It takes a little more work to "get it" sometimes. I just love that there are multiple translations. I think it helps get closer to what the original language meant. (I wish I could read Hebrew and Greek. I would love to be that smart!)

Born again Dec.29,1969- about to gratefully celebrate my 29th rebirthday. I use NKJ for daily reading, but several more for study purposes. I gave my two youngest copies of "The Message," but was surprised to find at least one passage that got off on denominational doctrine. I still consider it a study tool, but insist they read a translation not a paraphrase. Philippians 2:12
