Christian Topic: Bible Translations - which do you like?

Quote:
That's usually my reaction to many obscure scripture passages! But hubby doesn't know either. Thank God for translations and for study Bibles and concordances, and for preachers who explain the culture of the olden times so at least some passages don't sound so cruel or ridiculous.

We use the NIV and the KJV here. Some of our school books use the NIV and some use the KJV. I must say that the kids understand the NIV way better though. We do compare when needed. I also like to keep my Amplified Bible close at hand for when I study. There is just nothing more enlightening when I get stuck or need to think out a passage more.

As a Christian adult and member of the Catholic Church I find myself
paying more and more attention to the priest's interpretation of the
weekly Gospel reading. Some time I just don't get it.

I was at an Episcopal church two weeks ago for a Baptism. The
Gospel reading, I forget the number, angered and confused me.
The priest's explanation of it helped me a lot. Not to go too off topic
here but the priest was female and one of the best priests I have
ever listened to.

Do you guys go out of your way to memorize any scriptures? I used to, but have fallen out of the habit. It's funny what comes back to your head when you need it though.

We have always used the King James Version. I think it is more poetic in its wording than the newer versions. I will admit that there are lots of times I read a verse and just go

. I either try to figure it out on my own or bring it up at our Bible study on Wednesday nights.

I would love to be able to memorize Scripture. A friend of mine at Bible study spouts off verses all the time and I sit in awe of her. I think maybe I don't try hard enough.

I can barley remember my kids b-days LOL I wish I could recite scripture of the top of my head. My DH can and he knows a lot.I am kinda new to it. I have been saved for 5 years now and still have a whole lot to learn. Are any of you Born Again?

Our pastor preaches from the NIV mostly. When I am doing Bible study, I also refer to The Message. Sometimes using more than one version helps.

I prefer the NIV when reading. It is so much easier to understand, but I enjoy the KJV as well.

About the memorizing verses, I faithfully went to youth group, church camp, etc when I was growing up. Fell away from the church (about 20 years) and came back a few years ago. The pastor hears at least 3 out of 4 Sundays "I know a song with that verse in it" and then sing to him! It is amazing what you can remember.
