For Study - I use the Life Application Study Bible (NIV). If I want to just sit down and read scripture, I might use the Good News. I would like to get a copy of the Message, but have not done so yet.

Some scriptures like Psalm 23, in my opinion, must be read from King James Version.

For those of you asking questions about interpreting passages. See if your church has an Adult Bible Study or ask your Pastor / Priest about starting one.

I have participated in Several Bible Studies( 32 week courses, that require daily homework) and have been teaching adult Bible Studies for the last 8 or 9 years. I tend to teach classes for adult beginners. I love the enthusiasm when people start to get it.

I was so intimidated by the Scripture, but now I am inspired and encouraged by the Word.

FYI - I still hit stumbling blocks, but have wonderful friends (80 year old couple) who are the best when I want to understand in more detail. This couple has led most of the studies I participated in.

As for memorizing scripture. Several of the studies I have participated in had weekly memory verses. But for me, there are so many good references out there you can use when discussing specific topics.

Yep to the Born Again... I'm a "conversion" you could say, was raised catholic, hubby was baptist - we attend baptist church now.

We have both versions of the bible - King James and NIV, but we also have something we love love LOVE - a very old and early 19th century bible we love to read as well. Its very interesting to read from that and then go into the KJ or NIV - interesting indeed.

To actually read however, I prefer the NIV, much easier.

Personally, for reading, I prefer NLT, but I have read from several different versions. When I kinda get stuck, I go to bible.com and read different versions of the same passage. For me personally, reading the King James version was like reading a different language, until I already had a good understanding of the bible under my belt. New Living translation works best for me, and that is the version I bought my kids to start on. As they progress, I will introduce them to other versions.

I also highly recommend bible studies to help you get in depth perception of what you are reading. Beth Moore is one of my favourites.

I have always had a King James version, but I bought a New King James Bible. It is almost the same, but sometimes I read scriptures that I 'know' and they are not exactly the same. I have to go back and read the original. DH has NIV and he prefers that because he says he understands it better. I prefer my version better.

KJV, Tanach, and a Strong's Concordance. All at the same time. And an 1828 Noah Webster Dictionary for real meaning of words.
Not to start debates, but all of the other versions do leave passages out and change some words meanings and leave others out. And our current dictionaries have changed the meaning of words to better fit changing society.
That said we are not KJV only people. We don't believe we should make others decisions for them. That is just how our family studies.
