Christian Topic: Bible Translations - which do you like?

"Born Again Into Jesus!" I LOVE that!

I was raised Lutheren. It is OK, but not really my thing. I met and married a Baptist and have since been reborn into that faith. All in all I am a Christian. And being married into this family I also married into my own personal Preacher. When I get stuck, or the kids need someone to talk with further on something, we go visit my FIL who is a Preacher. At 87 his knowledge and experience is valuable.

I'll give my version at the end, but I'd like to ask a few questions first. When you look for a bible are you looking for one that is easy to read and understand at first reading? Are you looking for a bible that uses modern up to date language? Are you looking for a bible without error? I ask the last one because since it is from God it must be without error! God wrote the most important book in the history of man and we want it to be in third grade english. I know our educational system has degraded a lot, but that is asking too much. We should be teaching our children to read just so they can read the bible and understand what it says without man's interpretation. There is only one bible that is without error. There is only one bible that has God's command to study, II Tim 2:15, which means we need to be able to read for ourselves. That bible is the Authorized King James 1611.
For those of you who are saved, you are not "born again", you are a "new creation". Israel will be born again, but we are something new in Christ. There is so much to say on the bible issue. All except the KJV are from the same manuscripts. Some are not even translations, but paraphrases such as the NIV.
It doesn't matter which bible you like, it matters which which one is real. Which one is truly God's word.

this is the way that they teach at my church..

I believe that I am born again.. for me it seemed like a new life.. I was fed up with religion growing up budhist.. then athiest then more agnostic so to speak.. then I found christ.. and I felt compleate .. so really born again.. After you have found god some people turn away from god but he is always there and is always only one step away to turn back to.

I would agree. To me, being born again, regardless of the church denomination you attend, is that point in your life when you choose to believe in your heart and profess with your mouth that Jesus Christ is your Lord and Savior. Also you choose to live your life in accordance with Him. I have had adult friends who came to this ponit in their life as an adult. I know a 16 year old, who came to this point when he was 13.

As a Chritian, I don't care when a person gets to that point in their life, I just want them to get there.

I would like to respectfully disagree to this statement. If you want a true bible-you must read it in the languages it was written in. Things are always lost in translation so yes, even the KJV has lost things in translation. That is why I feel it is important to do bible studies, and look to the origins of the words to help you discover the true meanings.

And yes, I look for ease of reading. A bible is no good to anyone if they can't understand what it is saying. For someone beginning to read the bible--it can be very intimidating to start out with KJV. ( I speak from experience). NIV was the first bible that I read through cover to cover. Right now I use NLT, and it works for me. I also use studies to help me understand.

Just sharing a different perspective.

Use whichever version keeps you in a closer walk with the Lord.

We translated quite a bit of the bible from orginal greek and latin texts in my ancient language classes.... some things don't say what the King James version says they do.

Think that is a given, with all the different translations over the centuries. BUT, I believe the context of the thought is there....
