Christmas present from my chickens! First egg!!

So pretty!! All but 2 are laying now :) This was 3 days worth (minus a few we ate)

Really nice!! We are getting 10-12 a day now. I am getting the blue/green ones also, but not any the almost olive color of some of yours...they are amazing. Quite a blend of colors you have there. And, they look so big. My eggs are average size, except the occasional double yoke ones. What breeds do you have?

I ordered some 6-egg cartons from My Pet Chicken and I found some ribbon with chickens and eggs printed on it to tie thru the holes in the cartons to make cute gifts for friends and family. Everybody loves them and I love giving them fresh eggs.

I have Buff Orpingtons, Rhode Island Reds and Easter Eggers. I'm getting 4-5 eggs a day out of 9 hens (minus 2 that are not laying yet)

I have so many people asking me for eggs that I told my hubby we are going to have to get more chickens!!

I have wondered if it hurts the chickens to lay eggs, I even googled the question, but got so many different answers I still don't know. I hope not considering that they do it so often, it would make me feel guilty for eating the eggs!

I have read that we can compare a chicken laying an egg to a woman having a baby, only without the extreme pain. There is stress involved, but not pain. I have had the fun experience of being in the coop in the morning and afternoon and actually watching two of my girls lay. They just make little peeping noises that are barely audible, raise up, and then "plop", out comes the egg. They sit there a few minutes and then get out of the nesting box and eat some feed and drink some water. I never knew I would love having chickens so very much.

Thanks for the information!

I also never knew what joy there would be in having chickens be part of my life. I spent a long time being opposed to it because my grandpa had game chickens when I was young and the roosters would chase me and were very aggressive. They scared me silly!

I finally got over it and am SO glad I did. I love my chickens too!

I'm glad to hear that to. I was starting to feel bad for them laying almost an egg a day if it was painful for them.
