Citronella Plant

[chicks rule]

Does anyone know if this would be alright around the chickens, says it is okay around horses and animal barns. Do any of you have it planted? Thanks

When I was a kid, it was always so hot here in Phoenix that we used to sleep outside. My dad used to cut this herb from the canal bank and spread it around to keep the mosquitos off of us. He also would burn horse manure to keep the bugs away. Didn't work! We got eaten us anyway.

It's just a variety of scented geranium. Some varieties can be irritating to the skin but I'm not sure if this one is or not. I do know, though, that if your wanting to keep gnats and mosquitoes away, that lemon thyme is a lot more effective. And it's good for cooking. Not that I don't like the geraniums. We have both in our gardens.

I've used the Citronella plant before but I like Lemon Balm much better.
