I had no idea people would do this with chicks and bunnies. It would never occur to me to get these animals just for easter. We are planning to get some chicks just as soon as I get the playpen set up.

Ok, well, I replied to her post...here's what I said...

I am not in your area. Your post was put on a website message forum that I frequent. You should be ashamed of yourself. In a society where more and more things are becoming disposable, what kind of message are you giving your kids? Beside the heartbreak they will feel (unless you've already desensitized them from actual feelings already) when you take away the chicks, you are basically teaching your children that it's ok to get a pet and then just get rid of it when it becomes inconvenient, boring, or just doesn't suit your lifestyle anymore. PLEASE rethink your ad and your idea of an easter "gift".

I can't imagine the number of emails like mine she is going to get. I hope she doesn't get any serious responses to her ad!!

Well, I think it's very responsible. She obviously knows her limitations.
I live on a country road and "suburb" people are always dropping off animals they are bored with & tired of taking care of them.
I wonder how many

will be let go at the end of this summer to perish. People believe they adapt to the wild.
They seem like pet people, she makes dog treats. And let's face, small children have a short attention span. After the holiday photo's are taken and the novelty wears off, children are off to bigger & better things. Chicks are not very good at being affectionate, like a puppy or kitten. Unless you have treats in your hand....they run screaming.

my 2 cents

Ah, they are chicks and the kiddies can play with them for Easter.. then they go back to the farm... what's wrong wit dat?

As long as the children know they can have the chicks for a few days then they have to go back home, I don't think it's a bad idea at all. Im more worried about the kids being bummed when the chicks go bye bye than worried about the chicks having a few days of being held and kissed only to be rescued by the farmer

It's been going on for eons. We are just fortunate enough to have Easter all year long!!!

Brenda and Msbear... that's why I didn't know whether to be upset or not... because she was honest and put it out there that she didn't want to keep them! That was the responsible thing! Heck I would even let her bring the kids here and play with all the animals!! But I definitely WOULD NOT give her chicks to, in the end, break her kids hearts. I don't care if you give them the warning ahead of time... they are children and it will hurt!

I also think that it is pretty responsible of them.....at least they are prepared to give the chicks back rather then keep them until the cute wears off and then dump them. People are going to continue to buy chicks and bunnies and ducklings for Easter anyways so at least they are trying to be prepared and do the right thing.

I think it is a good thing they though ahead to give them back, but not so good planning on how the kids would feel or the actual care of the chicks while in their possession. Most people dont realize chicks take actual care, my own dad who grew up on a farm didnt understand why I had to buy a heat lamp for the chicks, or why I have to pen off an area for them in the coop. He like many other people assume baby chicks are the same as adult chickens and dont need 24hr a day care.
I have also heard of people borrowing chicks/chickens to cop a feel of what it is like having them beyond the inital excitement phase, which I also support. But these people are obviously not that type and just want the 'omg it is sooo cute and fluffffy!' factor which leads me to tell them to go to TSC and oogle the chicks there.

If it's cute, fluffy, little chicks that don't have feathers yet that she is looking for, is she going to go through the trouble of providing them with a heat lamp for the few days that she "borrows" them? Doubt it. So, she'd probably wind up returning dead chicks.
