My little Jack Russell/Chiu mix who loved her chickens had to be put down today.
That STUPID DOG who was in our yard, who pooped & pee'd all over, was caring Parvo. (Just a note, yes I should have gotten her vaccinated, but money has been tight, and she NEVER left the yard, and would only stand on the front porch, we had to carry her down. And she HATED the car.)
Sunday she was playing in the leaf pile hubby made for the girls (human & hens), and Sophie was jumping in through and around, having a blast. Monday she was laying on the couch, when I got home, she was in the same spot, and did not come to greet us. Tues. she was not eating or drinking and would hide, and not come when called. Called the vet, explained what she was doing, she was also vomiting after she drank and there was blood in her stool. We did not have $300.00 for treatment, that may or may not have worked. So I made the decision I dreaded. We then had to tell our girls, who did not take it at all well.
Took Sophie to the Vet today & they ran the test that confirmed that she did have Parvo, all I could do was hold her and cry and tell her how sorry I was. When I asked the doctor how it is transmitted, he said it is air born and has up to a two week incubation period. We had the lab mix, that I was trying to rehome for 4 months, from March - July, and he did not have shots either. The only thing that has been different in the last 5 months is that STUPID DOG getting into our fenced yard just over 2 weeks ago!
The vet also said our yard is now contaminated for the next 7 years, so if we do get another dog, it has to have all it's shots before it comes onto our property. If that dog ever shows his face again, I will take the butt end of my Uncle's shotgun & beat that dog to death.
Our other dog Marty is just so out of sorts, he does not know where to lay or who to follow.
RIP My Sweet Little Sophie.
