Close call with stray Pit Bull in our back yard. Sad Update! pg 7

You have to obey your surivial intincts...SHOOT the dog.

Why ?...

To protect your children & pets & livestocks. Dogs are meat-eater.

If you don't shoot the dog, the dog will kill your pets / livestocks, or dog will hurt your child.

You are owner of property = you are within right to destroy any animals that harm your pets / livestock.

Owners of spray dogs have to learn a hard lesson...Never ever let a dog wandering freely outside owner's property.

Your children are very very important.

Clinton.

My little Jack Russell/Chiu mix who loved her chickens had to be put down today.

That STUPID DOG who was in our yard, who pooped & pee'd all over, was caring Parvo. (Just a note, yes I should have gotten her vaccinated, but money has been tight, and she NEVER left the yard, and would only stand on the front porch, we had to carry her down. And she HATED the car.)

Sunday she was playing in the leaf pile hubby made for the girls (human & hens), and Sophie was jumping in through and around, having a blast. Monday she was laying on the couch, when I got home, she was in the same spot, and did not come to greet us. Tues. she was not eating or drinking and would hide, and not come when called. Called the vet, explained what she was doing, she was also vomiting after she drank and there was blood in her stool. We did not have $300.00 for treatment, that may or may not have worked. So I made the decision I dreaded. We then had to tell our girls, who did not take it at all well.

Took Sophie to the Vet today & they ran the test that confirmed that she did have Parvo, all I could do was hold her and cry and tell her how sorry I was. When I asked the doctor how it is transmitted, he said it is air born and has up to a two week incubation period. We had the lab mix, that I was trying to rehome for 4 months, from March - July, and he did not have shots either. The only thing that has been different in the last 5 months is that STUPID DOG getting into our fenced yard just over 2 weeks ago!
The vet also said our yard is now contaminated for the next 7 years, so if we do get another dog, it has to have all it's shots before it comes onto our property. If that dog ever shows his face again, I will take the butt end of my Uncle's shotgun & beat that dog to death.

Our other dog Marty is just so out of sorts, he does not know where to lay or who to follow.

RIP My Sweet Little Sophie.

I'm sorry for your loss. But it's not really the stray's fault. Blame the owners for letting him roam, blame yourself for not getting her vaccinated, but don't threaten to beat a dog who's only doing what it was allowed to do. It doesn't know any better.

Parvo is spread by contact with the virus that is shed in feces and vomit. A dog does not usually show symptoms until it has been infected for up to a week, sometimes as little as 3 days. Parvo can live in the soil for up to a year. You should bleach your yard if you plan on getting a puppy or unvaccinated older dog.

Im SO sorry for your loss. Its never easy but its also not the dog's fault but it's owners. Ive been in the financial issues boat but for something like this you do need to find a way. Yes if this dog hadnt showed yours would be OK for now but only for now. Im not trying to beat you up about this. Anyways I do horse rescue & recently had an outbreak of strangles, (long story, bottom line: 3 weeks of successful quarantine but somewhere in the end of that 3 week period someone slipped up) & the vet said that for dirt bleach doesnt absorb but Lysol does. Not sure how true this is but we sprayed our dirt with Lysol just to be safe.

So sorry for your loss.

I want to put my 2 cents in about the stray dog. If you get a BB gun, you may as well use a fly swatter. They're about the same when it comes to a big, strong, aggressive dog.

Until you get trained and get a real gun, I suggest you get yourself a giant can of wasp spray. The kind that shoots 20' or better. If the dog approaches, squirt him in the face with it. This will blind him and be very painful. Then I would throw a very large trash can or trap over him and make him secure. Then take it to the Sheriff's office and leave it with them to deal with.

If you don't want to take it to the Sheriff's, then find a way to destroy it and bury it somewhere.

You will put the lives of your kids and your livestock at risk with a flyswatter of a play gun.

Sorry for your loss. Parvo is pretty ubiquitous so it may or may not have been from the pitbull. You should expect a puppy to contract it if the puppy has not been vaccinated. It is really senseless & tragic in this day and age for a puppy to die of Parvo because it is so easily prevented with the shot(s). Around here, the shots are available cheap at the feed-store (you don't have to go to a vet & shot is less than $10) -- again, totally preventable.

totally preventable and less than 10 bucks per shot... parvo can be carried on your shoes, your clothes, in the neighborhood and yes with other dogs. vaccinate your dogs and they wont die from parvo.

The Vets office said my yard would be infected for 7 years, we are on an acre of land. As for bleaching the yard, how many cases of bleach would I need, and then where do I let my chickens roam?
And I am already beating myself up for it, I woke up at 4 this morning, and cried for two hours, knowing that my sweet Sophie was suffering, and would have to be put down today. The guilt is like a knife in my heart, as I watched her pass from this life into the next, knowing what I should have done & did not do, it has made me physically ill all day today.
Seeing the confusion in my other dog's eyes brings me to tears, and all I do is hold onto him and cry. I walk into my daughter's room and look to see where Sophie would sleep, and she is not there, I can't get over the guilt of not getting her, her shots. And yes I am angry at the owner of the other dog, for letting him roam the neighborhood, possibly causing harm to other dogs.
My husband has already seen the dog again this last week roaming the streets of our neighborhood. Our other dog, Marty is nick named Houdini because if there is a way out of our backyard he will find it. The week of the stray coming into our fenced yard, Marty had not escaped, so we still can't figure out how this stray got into our yard, not once but twice.

I can't sleep, because every time I close my eyes, all I see is Sophie's little face.
