Cloudy Days in the Coop - My Adventures with Chickens.

Pics
Hey, everyone! Today has brought beautiful blue skies, cool temperatures, thick frost, and happy chickens!
I let the girls out to free-range, and they spent quite a bit of time enjoying picking through the leaves on the forest floor and the small treat of scratch. The temperature has been lingering at around 27 Fahrenheit, and poor Boba seemed to not be enjoying the cold at all - The sweet, fluffy hen was fluffed up and shivering slightly. I brought her into the house to warm up by the fire for a bit, and after a while of that she seemed warm and floofy! (Now I wish I got pictures of her sitting in the basket by the fire - oh well. )

One thing that I found that amazed me today was this pot of beautiful white flowers that started blooming today. I found this rather astonishing, as before it had simply been tall, dry, brown stalks, and I thought the plant was dead. But now, when it’s in the cold, frigid air, the white blossoms burst forth. It seemed to almost be saying - ”Don’t give up hope! Even if the world seems dark, cold, and unwelcoming - keep trying!” :D

And now - enough plants! Chicken time!

Annnd...Minnie, even though she’s been running around like crazy all day and all of her pictures turned out blurry, she wanted to say hi. :)

I hope everyone is having an amazing day. :hugs
Your flock looks well, and I'm glad Boba got warm and cozy. The pictures are amazing, as usual, and the story about the white flowers is heartwarming! Have a great day!

Merry Christmas, everyone! I haven’t been on much, especially after losing Boba. But I thought I’d stop by to wish all of you amazing people Merry Christmas and share some pictures from the past few days. :)
On the Winter Solstice, I got my first snow, which I thought was great timing! It’s lasted to today, which means I’ve been blessed with a rare ’White Christmas.’ Here are a few pictures:

As mentioned above, tragedy struck on Tuesday when my beloved Silkie, Boba, was taken by a predator. For those who follow this thread, you know that Boba has always had a special place in my heart and always there to comfort me. She was the hen who I considered my emotional support animal. So losing her has been devastating. Though she went missing without a trace, I made a memorial place for her. I’ll never forget my little hen.

Goodbye, Boba. :hugs

Now, today, I made my flock a chain of popcorn and berries as a treat, and spent some quality time with them. I can’t free-range them because of Boba’s death, I don’t think I could take another loss, so I played with them, sang to them and read a book called Cinders, (AKA, a chicken version of Cinderella. It was pretty sweet. :D ) and am working on finding some fun boredom-busters. (Feel free to give me some ideas!)

@Starburst sounds like you had a pleasant Christmas with your flock, I am sure they enjoyed all the goodies, songs and stories! I talk to my birds all the time, they really do listen and know what I am saying. They are smarter than we know!

Beautiful photos and the plaque you made is a wonderful tribute to a beautiful hen, she brought you such comfort and joy, she definitely did her job here on Earth, filling you with spirit. :)

Thanks for sharing, massive love and hugs across the miles! :hugs

The pictures are beautiful, what a wonderful Christmas!

I'm sorry you lost Boba, that is super rough. :hugs The memorial is so sweet, you could not have given her any better.

Happy New Year's Eve, everyone! 2020 has definitely been a different year, and it has been pretty rough at points. But one thing that I’ve learned, and will never forget, is how special each life is, and how unique each person is, and that the time we get with those people should be cherished. :) Anyway, on to the fluffy chickens! Today, I did let them out to get some grass for 8 minutes with me standing amongst them, rake in hand. I know, I probably shouldn’t have, but some of the girls clearly needed a break from their VERY muddy run. It’s been drenching, pounding rain for the past few days, so their run has been pretty bad. (Need to get that covered part up as soon as the storm lets up!) Also, I got my chickens a brand new waterer, which is 5 gallons and is pretty nice, so I think they’re enjoying it. Also, Mochi needs some help, as you’ll see in the pictures, she’s covered in mud! I’m thinking about giving her a bath or something of the sort.
Also, their feeder needs a nice washing, it’s caked in mud. So. Much. Mud!
Sorry, I’ll stop complaining now. :D Mud does happen to be part of life when you're living in a very rainy spot - but I love it just the way Washington is, earthquakes, mud, and all. :D
