Cochin Bantams and Frizzle Cochin Bantams!!

A wonderful Frizzle and my favorite Black pullet. Both will be hens soon.

Black Cochin Bantams, I'm pretty new to Cochins--chickens in general--and have bought four young birds from a well-known breeder judge in the north east. I'm trying to get a feel for the breed, so anything I say should be taken with a rather large grain of salt. I also intend to breed my good Jamie Matts blue cockerel to my double-copy frizzle hatchery black hen of dubious quality to get what I wanted to begin with--proper frizzles.

Your black girl seems to have a wonderful wing set. Is that what you are looking for?

Your frizzle doesn't seem to have as tight or high a wing set. Is that because she is a frizzle? Can a frizzle wing be as high as your black girl's?

Great Questions!

You good start to get the frizzles you want. I only keep pullets so I never will make a double by accident. My frizzle pullet is good as far as frizzles go but I know of better ones. Her wings do curl out and are at least level and not weak.Wings on frizzles will often look like hers. That is why you want the widest feathers possible on what you mate them to. Feather width is what sets the best ones apart from the pack. I saw some very good ones last Dec at Knoxville bred by the President of the ABA.

The Black pullet is pretty darn good. I hope she reproduces something as good as she is. Strong wings and wide feathers. The Black has been in 4 Shows since March. Was Reserve Featherleg at the Heartland show at Anna, Il behind one of my Bl Cocks. She didn't do much at the show at Frankfort Ky where I did have Ch FL with a Bl Hen. At Sedalia Mo she was Reserve FL in Both shows behind a Bl Hen that was Reserve of Show at 1 show and Grand Champion in the 2nd show. This pullet is doing quite well and is laying fertile eggs so I am quite happy with her.

Thanks for the tips.

I have three really nice pullets from Jamie Matts, plus the cockerel. I'm somewhat afraid to try my "hand" at breeding. For some reason the double copy hen has stopped laying. Would I start AI'ing her before she is back to laying again? I would say the cockerel and I both need the practice since I've never done it before.

Are you going to enter your birds in the On-line show with Cochins Internatnional? I'm going to try to get photos of the birds I got from the breeder and enter them. I guess I need to bath the splash at least.
