Cochin Bantams and Frizzle Cochin Bantams!!

Pics
I have a couple of perfect colored Millie cochin's and 1 is a blue millie BUT like Black Cochin said, its hard to get them. Mine are 3-4 generations in to get these and even Im surprised to have them as most have to much white. A few breeders locally have offered me $100 for each hen and I turned them down as they are so hard to get. It took hatching 209 chicks to get the 4 I have and I got lucky to get the blue from a BYC member.

Wonder if someone could tell me the diff between calico and mille fleur. From the pics I'm not sure which is which.
Hi CeeJ,

Like Black Cochin said most that you see are going to be calico's as mille in cochins is still in project stage for every breeder that i am aware of, some are getting very close but i am not aware that anyone has perfected it yet. The best example you can get of what the color pattern is supposed to look like is to look up the mille fleur d'uccle. Once you see a correctly patterned d'uccle it will help you understand the too white comments vs a mille pattern for the cochins. The mille you are looking for a vermillion feather color with a black chevron and a white tip. Calico's have all three colors but may have full white feathers, etc.

Another good place to learn about cochins is the Cochins International website. This is the national cochin club and has lots of great information there. :)

If you would like to see a good picture progression of the mille cochin breeding, i can suggest West Knoll Farms website.---Careful though , cochins are very addicting

Here's a pic of her yesterday: This is her when she was feathering out. I think white (no color) is dominant or co-dominant, meaning that her chicks would be white or a light version of their sire. She needs to be mated to a smooth roo to have frizzled babies; if she's mated to a frizzled roo, they'd be frazzled (frizzled with split ends, kind of). I'll start hatching in Jan/Feb. I think 1/4 of her chicks can be expected to be frizzled, but my roo is LF, so the sizes will be anywhere from as small as her to as large as him (think white Leghorn size). I'm working on getting a better picture of her. She's so white that even on overcast days there's too much glare (as you can see in the top pic).
She's beautiful! I do like the white, but would really love to get the calico. Just something about them. Looks like it may be hard to find, and I may not be able to afford one anyway. My email is [email protected] if ya don't mind letting me know specifics as to cost, shipping, straight-run or sexed, and if you vaccinate for mareks. She sure is a pretty girl!

Wow! Thanks for all your replies and info. Cochins are one of my favorite breeds. I had a roo who was the absolute best ever! Sadly he took his job seriously and was on the losing end of a hawk attack. Saved his girls though. I sell eggs so first had to get my flick up to snuff on that end. Now I don't have much room, but tge space I have is reserved for cochins. I prefer the calico over the millie fleur, lol, as I said I'm not in it for show or breeding. Just am a crazy chicken lady who has her heart set on a couple of these calico beauties. If anyone has a couple females down the road that need a great home, please let me know. As much as I love them a $100 a girl is a bit steep for me as a nonbreeder, lol. My dream world would be female chicks. Straight run, I suppose, is more likely. Thanks for all the great info!!

Thank you for the vote of confidence. It has been a long hard road! And I am still plugging away. As I always tell everyone, I do not breed for the pattern so much as of yet but more to get that type in there and stay. The pattern will be more workable when that is accomplished. I have some real beauties in the MF and soon I hope I will create some with magnificent pattern as well as superb conformation. Meanwhile, it is fun to add those Frizzle MFs, too! The color and pattern really pop on those!
