Cochin Bantams and Frizzle Cochin Bantams!!

I think you mean an unrecognized color can't go beyond Best of Variety ( the unrecognized color).  All Best of Varieties compete (except for the unrecognized varieties) for Best of Breed.  That's my understanding of it.

For example, Splash can be shown in their variety, Splash.  All the Splash compete for Best of Variety.  I have several colors that are not recognized but are shown:  Splash bantam Cochins, Splash and Lavender  LF Ameraucana.

Question for you serious exhibitors:  The ABA Centennial Show is something important to Splash Cochins.  Can someone explain it to me.  Can Splash compete for Best of Breed at that show or will they only be able to compete to Best of Variety.  Is this show a formality for the acceptance of t he splash variety or does there still have to be approval by ABA?

I'm intending to go to that show with a splash.

Lol (I'm laughing at myself here). Yes, an unrecognized variety can only win best of variety. I was lost in my thoughts and that was a typo

This bird was washed with Tide with bleach alternative (for a while sold as Vivid White both are the same product). I would never do anything to endanger my Cochins. This is the method used by many exhibitors of White birds. I know for a fact that the President of the American Bantam Association washes his White birds this way.

So were these birds.

I am the kind of chicken breeder purests do not like because I take purebreds and make them not pure bred- I was not trying to deceive anyone on here, and when I would post, I did say mixes.

but this is not a mutt- double frizzle/double cochin. but not SQ.

I guess, Gimmie Birdies, this is why people are pointing out that the birds you post pictures of are not Cochins.

By your own admission, you intentionally breed out the characteristics of a breed by breeding it to other breeds or mutts and then pass off the offspring as purebreds. If you call it a particular breed, you are calling it a purebred, whether it is show quality or not.

There is nothing wrong with breeding chickens that are not purebred. What is wrong it to suggest they are a breed they are not.

It is very understandable for serious fanciers of the breed to take you to task for admittedly posting pictures of mutts on a thread dedicated to a breed. Newcomers to the breed want to learn about Cochins. The Cochin standard was first published in 1874. Many fanciers of the breed have spent their life and their savings exhibiting and breeding to that standard. To have someone proudly proclaim their goal is to breed "Cochins" that are not purebred is quite a smack in their face.

There must be other threads on BYC that cater to people who want to ignore breed standards and breed chickens that have the traits and characteristics not found in any known breed of chicken. [I just had a vision that I can't get out of my mind: Imagine breeding a bird to Cochin standards except size--have it be the size of a Jersey Giant. I just can't get that vision out of my mind. Or a Jersey Giant-sized Silkie. That would be quite the sight.]

I don't think any of the photos I have shown of my Frizzle birds on this thread have been SQ. No one has said anything about them needing to be SQ.
However, your little chick shows a lot less features of Cochin chicks. I think that is where it all got started with this. The little darling has very long legs, stands very upright and not as much fuzz on the legs as Cochin chicks show. We are sure you love the chick but it doesn't look much like a Cochin in it's features. I know that a lot of people that breed bantam Cochins get tired of seeing people show photos of chicks that are mistaken for bantam Cochins or Frizzles.

Here are 2 of my my recent chicks hatched from my Frizzle pens. Note the short legs, heavy foot and leg feathering and other features of the bantam Cochin that are not from SQ breeding pens.

This is a thread for bantam Cochins and Frizzle bantam Cochins and those of us that have been breeding for a good while hope to help those that want to learn more but being attacked while trying to be helpful is not conducive to this thread. Sharing ideas and helpful info is what we would like to see more of here on the thread.
