Cochin breeding, genetics, and showing

Pics
I'm thinking of getting a few cochin (standard sized not bantam) for showing, does anyone have what they should "ideally" look like?
also ive seen hatcheries like cackle and murray mcmurray that say their cochins are "purebred" is this true? i was thinking of getting them from cackle but if they arent purebred im not even going to try

there's a huge difference between being purebred and being show quality... and typically hatcheries don't produce show quality.

personally, I would go to a breeder and get a few started birds, rather than deal with chicks from hatcheries. it'll save you lots of headache and years of breeding inferior birds trying to perfect the type...

what is the difference between show quality and purebred?
also i really have no choice but go through atleast a somewhat good hatchery due to living in such a remote part of california.
i know cackle hatchery does say they are part of the APA and ABA so wouldnt that make their birds acceptable for show?

Show quality is just that. Worthy of being shown based on meeting the criteria for the breed as stated in either ABA or APA.

Purebred would be just that. When bred together you would get more like the parent stock and meeting general guidelines for the breed.

In Cochins SQ birds will have proper eye color and good/strong wings where a Purebred may have a weak wing or even a split wing and lesser color in eyes.

I disagree that you have no choice.

I am the only Cochin breeder listed by Cochins International in my whole state. I made contacts and bought a pair of quality breeders from a man in neighboring state. He delivered them to me at a show we both went to . Shipping is always possible though not inexpensive. Decide what you want and ask who raises good ones of those. Some will sell eggs to hatch ( risky due to shipping damage) and some will sell adult so you can breed your own. Generally speaking better quality birds from breeders than hatcheries.

Now the down side of using real breeders. We don't keep a lot of extra birds around so we can't always help. We generally charge more than hatcheries because we cull to maintain quality where they send out everything that hatches. If showing is the desired outcome from having Cochins then breeders are the only real option.

Purebreds make great pets and lay as well or better than SQ birds. As always please ask questions.

Couldnt agree more it is all about what you want to do with the birds , check with other cochin breeders about whats in the directory"dont have mine with me now" , there are some really nice birds being raised in Cali. get on FB and go to one of the groups for CI or the CI sale group or contact Jennifer Binns Morales she's in cali and will take good care of you.

@John farmer. can you link me to a site or something for her?
i really was going to start like in county fairs and what not before moving up to bigger shows. but our 4-H here is starting to go by apa/aba standards

I have some questions of curiosity...

I have this really good Rhode Island White pullet. No mail for her other than a Columbian Wyandotte. She has really nice egg size, yellow legs, excellent comb, excellent RI type, and nice wide feathers. All of the above are things I would like to increase in my Wyandottes. What would happen if I put a Colmubian Wyandotte on a Rhode Island White?

I understand the problem of under color and body type are not what you want for a Wyandotte but what other problems might crop up?

Thanks
Rob

you might post a new thread on that topic... personally I wouldn't do it. I'd find a correct mate for whichever bird you want more of. for the money you would spend on housing and feeding several generations, getting what you want, you can buy a good pair shipped for much less and get you where you want to be much easier.

Thanks...I totally agree and could do that and still might. I was just bounce out some ideas at the moment to see what and who might respond on the idea. I did start a thread called "Building and working with Columbian Patterned Birds". There have been several hits on the thread already.
