Hi
I have read about Cochin chickens having heart problems. Has anyone who has a Cochin chicken experienced them having heart problems?
Thanks

I actually never heard of that. Do you remember where you read it from? I have three Blue Cochin hens that are very healthy and great birds. The only way they'd have heart problems are possibly too much heat. (But this is doubtful). I suggest the breed. :)

Hi, welcome to BYC! :frow

I never heard that before.
I've had 1 regular buff Cochin and 1 giant black Cochin. Both girls seemed great to me! Lovely birds. :love Never had health issues with either but they did go to new homes while still under 1 year old or around there.

I would NOT accept heart issues as a cause of death without a necropsy that concluded that. Truth is many people will never know and assign whatever cause makes sense to them. Things happen fast in the chicken world

To me they aren't great layers but laid well enough and were fun birds. I wouldn't have a problem getting them again if I had room in the flock. :thumbsup

Ok, thank you very much for the advice! It's very helpful! How much bigger is the large Cochin compared to the regular Cochin?
Thanks for your help!

Hi, thanks for your advice!!!
I found it on this website: https://www.omlet.co.uk/breeds/chickens/cochin/
It's great to know that your 3 don't have any problems and so this breed would be great for me!
Thanks again
Wow, I disagree with a lot of stuff that article says. They lay medium size eggs in my experience. Nor were they lazy. I live in the PNW and rain wasn't a problem for these girls, given enough dry space before entering the lay box. Worst thing was them getting the eggs wet.

But it says they live 10 years. That seem like a good long average, even with heart disease! Seems to me making sure they good protein would be key to their health since they are so heavily feathered and feathers are made of 90% protein, it's amino acids.

Thank you so much! You've made some great and valuable points which I completely agree with!
This breed is definitely on my short list! Would you recommend the large or medium breed?
