Cochin Thread!!!

And, as promised, I did get some pictures tonight. Although sought-after shots are never as artistic as natural, spontaneous shots sometimes turn out!
My little guy from Danny's eggs,

And these pictures don't do these birds justice, but I started too late and lost the light.

Gotta get some better pictures of the girls!
These birds are beautiful!

Such nice colors!

Got our first Cochin / Mille Fluer cross last night from the wonderful ki4got! This little chick has already stolen our hearts in a big way! She's working hard to get us trained to her liking... and what she likes is to be held! She seems to prefer being held to being in her nice, warm brooder. She'll happily go in her brooder to eat and drink, but when those needs have been taken care of, she peeps *loudly* until someone picks her up... and then settles right down.

In fact, last night when we got home, we got the 4 keets and "Millie" settled in their brooder. Millie started peeping very loudly, but we just ignored her thinking she would get used to her new digs and settle down. I had gone to get something to set the waterer on, and when I came back, my husband says, "She got out!" She had been sitting on the edge of the table, peeping for attention until he turned around and noticed her. When he picked her up, she quickly settled down and fell asleep on his chest.

(Yes - we have a top for the brooder, but I had left it off because I was still messing with stuff in there - and it's really deep... we just have a very friendly little chick who was determined to get out!)

Millie has been out with my 9-year-old much of the morning - sitting on her lap watching TV. I bring her back to the brooder regularly for food and water, but as soon as she's done, she lets us know (loudly) that she wants to be held again. Loving this sweet little chick!

Do you know anybody with a nice White roooster?
Actually, I have several, lol. I have around 22 cockerels from this years hatch, and I plan to keep 3. I also hatched around 15 pullets, and I plan to keep 4 of those. I wont know for a few months what they will make, but they are shaping up nicely. I also have a smooth male that I hatched last year, used him and another this year for breeding. I cant ship unfortunately, but if we can work something out about meeting somewhere or at a show later this year, I will be happy to keep a nice cockerel for you. Free of charge.

Sounds good to me! As you can see, I live 400 and some miles away. You just let me know when you are heading to a show and I will see. Do you show any where near me?

Hi all,

I'm looking for pictures of "Black Cochins" - both rooster and hen - from the front, side, and top.

I'm developing a facebook game about raising and showing chickens and at first I'm putting pictures in the game, but eventually the chickens will be modeled and I'll be using the pictures to wrap around the 3D models so that players can pose their chickens from any angle.

This thread is full of pictures but few are at exactly the right angel in order to bring them into modeling software - can anyone help out. I was going to introduce "Black Brahmas" when the game come out - but the cochins are so much cooler and they are more popular.

I'm also looking for pictures of "White Silkies", "Buff Ameraucanas", and "Dominiques". In the game the chickens are often sitting either in a nest or on a roost - so a picture from the front is especially important. Other angles are useful too as there are bunches of animations - like when you wash the chicken getting it ready to show.

Over the next year my plan is to introduce every breed/color I can find into the game and develop a database of knowledge so that not only is the game fun to play it will be a good resource for chicken people to use. :)

Thanks in advance to anyone that can help out with pictures.

Cheers,

I understood about having two copies of barred vs one copy, but I didn't realize you could tell by the phenotype.
a double gene gives much tighter bars. while a single gene seems to make them more spread out and less distinct.

compare barred rock hen vs roo. that's a good example, since as a pure breed, roos will have 2 genes and hens always have only 1 gene, since it's a sex linked one.

well, chances are she's missing her LARGE brooder bunch. LOL she was originially in with the older chicks (4-6 weeks old) that went outside yesterday, but being the youngest, i didn't feel she was quite ready to go with them, so she became the oldest in the baby brooder... (except for my 'damaged' coturnix, hubby's named 'spin cycle' LOL who seems to think he's a chicken now)

it was great meeting you all last night. 8) tho next time you come up it should be during daylight so you can really see everyone. LOL
