Cochin Thread!!!

I had a little brown red chick hatch a few days ago but there's a problem. Hoping somebody on here has had experience with this; one leg is twisted back behind and the poor little thing can hardly get around. Is there anything I can do? A splint? What are the chances of fixing it and this chick living a normal, healthy life?
Thanks in advance~

I had two cochin chicks with bad legs and tryed splints with both. We ending up having to put them down later. My husband -not me. I have a hard time killing things that are tiny and cute :(. Seems like a lot of people use bandaids and it helps. Good luck!

Twyla, I'm not sure if there's anything you can do, but this is, I believe, the best site for poultry orthopedics. I'll keep my fingers crossed for the little one.

I've had a few chicks with spraddle leg and the bandaid thing worked perfectly for them. You would just put it on like you were hobbling a horse, however this sounds a bit different. Depending on how old it is, you might be able to train it straight.

I have been reading about "split wings" and have a couple questions. I have read that folks will wait to see how a bird feathers out, up to the first adult molt, to see about split wings and culling. If the bird has visible split wings at 2 months old, do you experienced folks think there is still a chance that it will change? Another question, if a Cochin is two months old now do you think it will moult this fall or spring/fall 2013? I know these questions probably really depend on the line/genetics of the bird, but just in general from your experience-any info will help.

Here is the bird in question (from BonneTerreChick's post)--a 2-month-old bantam pullet:

ETA I didn't have anyone to help me get a pic of her wing pulled out, but I can get one tomorrow if that helps!

Ummmmmmmm.............bummer............
Have you separated the feathers at the joint to see if there is an unfeathered gap right at the bend of the wing? If there is, then it will never be correct, but if you can see a feather trying to come in at that location she could well be OK.

Just wanted to say hello to everyone here in the Cochin crowd! I only have one right now, but she is the sweetest thing. I have slowed down on acquiring chickens, as I need to build additional accommodations before I add any new birds. When I first started getting them, it seemed okay to get as many would fit in the brooder--after all, they are so much easier and quieter and cheaper to feed than dogs! But now that they are all growing up, I'm realizing there may be a limit to how many I would like to have. I plan to add just one more pen, and at the moment I am thinking Mottled Black Bantam Cochins...to me they embody all my favorite chickeny qualities, and have such a nostalgic look! If anyone has any suggestions on where to acquire some well bred birds of this type, I would be very grateful for a lead. Eggs, chicks, older birds--doesn't really matter to me, except older birds would need to be local enough for me to pick them up. Thanks!

And I am worried that if I keep looking at this thread, I will lose my resolve to only add one pen--you all have some amazing birds, in colors I'd never seen before!

This is my token Cochin, Cupcake.

My suggestion for Mottled is Mandy of the Cochin Coop. She's a very good friend of mine and I've been to her house many times and seen her birds and her set up. She takes very good care of her birds and anything you would get from her will be from show quality birds. I don't know where you are, but I know that Mandy has a lot of experience shipping.
