....and on another note....I have been on cochinsinternational reading the standard of Perfection for bantams and looking at the pictures of winners trying to get a clue on the chickens I want to keep. I have about 10 that are 4+ months old. I will wait on the younger ones a few more months. I still don't seem to have a clue.

I know my blacks almost all have a dark beak, but the legs are good and yellow but the tops are dusky. I feel I may be keeping these cochins for a year to figure it out

. I think I have made the mistake before of culling the birds that were probably better than the ones I kept and I do not want to do that again.

You asked for it - LOL! OK - so ki4got said her hatch date was about June 26th. These pictures were taken on July 29th making this chick almost 5 weeks old. Pullet or Roo? What's your guess, folks?

Ok I have a question....does someone have a pic of a five week old pullet? Because I'm having a hard time figuring out why this is a male, so a comparison pic would be great. And if you could tell me why this is a rooster? Dumb it down for me, cause I'm brand new at Cochins and my first five chicks were sent sexed.
Thanks.

Generally speaking, at this stage this little guy's comb is showing more development than a pullet's comb would. With many cockerels you'll also see more wattle development too (this one isn't showing that yet). From what I'm learning, there will be some variation which can make it hard to determine the gender at this age.

Experienced folks - please feel free to correct/add to these thoughts! I'm a newbie too.

Yes that's what I was basing my guess on, comb and wattles development. My first thought was pullet because there isn't a hint of red to the comb, but I went back and looked at some of my cockerels that age, and while some have red combs, others don't.

did you take any pics of the baby pen? there's plenty in there to compare. LOL

here's a pair of silver laced i hatched last fall... cockerel on the left, pullet on the right. you can see his comb/wattles are more noticable than hers are...

The comb is very tall and he is beginning to get longer wattles at a young age.
I've attached a picture, if you look in the lower right hand corner there is a 5-6 week old pullet. I hope this helps. Actually, these are all pullets except for the biggest one.
I would suspect that yours will have a red comb soon. The main cochin in this picture is about 8-10 weeks old.

Hope this helps you.

Also, here is one at 4-5 weeks that is a rooster. The comb looks similar to the way yours appears now.

And here he is today at 7-8 weeks. As you can see, the comb is much more red and has a "puffy" look. So be on the lookout for it to do that, it should within a few short weeks.
