Cochin Thread!!!

Just a quick question from the ignorant: Whenever I decide to start showing my mottled cochins, can I only show the black mottled ones as mottled, or can I also show blue mottled or self-blue mottled as mottled?

Black Mottled, Blue Mottled and Self-Blue Mottled are three different Varieties, and must be noted properly on your entry form. As the Blue and Self-Blue Mottleds are not accepted Varieties, the highest they could win would be Best of Variety.

If you own a Bantam Standard or Standard of Perfection, it will detail the exact coloring and pattern for Mottled.

Thanks Casey. What do you like to wash your Whites with and do you use blueing? Do you blow dry?

I used to use Ivory liquid soap for all my birds, its gentle on the birds, and the feathers, and it smells nice too. But now, I use flea shampoo for kittens. It smells just as nice, gets them just as clean, and it will also kill any mites and parasites they may have on them somewhere. The exact one I use, you let stay on the bird for 5 minutes before rinsing, and during that time I like to make sure the entire bird is lathered up nicely, running my fingers through the feathers and such. I thoroughly make sure the bird is rinsed, and then wrap them in a towel, and begin to blow dry the head, feet, and wings. I blow dry them on low until they are almost dry and then let them finish drying on wire. I dont use bluing, tried it once and ended up with a blue spotted bird, lol. But, you can use a small amount of bleach in the water, and have known of people using peroxide to whiten the feathers(ive never tried this, been afraid that it would damage the feathers), but if you use either make sure they birds feathers are rinsed very well before you start to dry them. A frizzle will not look its best until it is clean. Frizzled birds arent any harder to keep or raise than any other bird, but when showing them bathing is almost a requirement to get your bird to look its best.

Is anyone out there raising or know of someone who also raises Silver Penciled Bantam Cochins. I am trying to get together with someone else to insure we continue to have this variety. Annamay is the only other person doing this variety at this time that I know of.

Craig - I just found this thru Google. I only looked at the first few listings. Maybe later tonight I can dig deeper on Google.

I just printed my application for Cochins International. It states that membership runs from Jan. 1- Dec. 31, should I wait until December to send in my application?

I also went to the American Poultry Association's website. The 2010 Standard Of Perfection goes for $59. How often do they update it? Should I just buy an older one on ebay much cheaper and wait for the new one?
Thanks
Tony

I have tried the Tide with Bleach alternative on my Light Brahmas and am not happy with how it totally strips the feathers of any oils.

Be careful with the Blue spotted birds, You might start a new fad color.
