Cochin Thread!!!

Go back to about to post 11380 or so and we went over this. It is a peeper. It cuts down on pecking and fighting. I posted an add that went over installing them. It blocks or restricts much of the forward vision.

Today was picture day. They all hatched between 7/1 and 8/5, and are pictured in order of age. Keep in mind that these are all only 3/4 Golden Laced. But I'm really having difficulty seeing any that I want to keep as breeders, even though they would be bred back to GL. I see a couple of flat (crow) heads, there are a couple with willow legs, neck and hackles should NOT be black. I dont' think Brown Band is going to make it - she has a bum leg and I'll probably have to put her down.
Guess I'll give the rest another month to make my final decisions, once I see if the coloring and pattern improves on any of them.


Pink Band: (Blue)


Yellow Band: (Blue)


Green Band: I think he's been my most promising all along - just have to wait and see if he lightens up more.



Black Band: (Willow legs)


Lavender Band:


Blue Band: Nice, but way too much black. He's maturing faster than the rest.


Brown Band: (Willow Legs)


White Band:


Red Band: (Willow Legs)

Green band ckl, and white band pullet. Those will be your two best marked birds. I realize they are 3/4 GL, but you are seeing complete lacing on both so those would be the two I'd definitely keep. You may want to let some of the pullets grow out a while to evaluate type.

I don't know if he could have silkie or not. I doubt it, he doesn't have any silkie features other than weird feathers and my friend that I got him from knows his parentage includes only cochins in the last 3 generations. My guess is that he is pure bred, but perhaps not of good quality. I mostly just wanted him because he was cute

but I did want to breed him with my cochin pullets because they really are of good quality.

He looks to me to be Blue, which means his sire is the Mottled.

Splash x Splash = 100% Splash
Black x Splash = 100% Blue

Thanks, I wasn't sure as the hens are darker than him. I've only hatched 2 from the splash though and they were white.

blue x blue = 50% blue, 25% splash, 25% black?

What will I get if I breed my young rooster to hens from the same pairing since they all should have a mottled gene?
