WildWoodCochins I hope * Jewel * (I forgot the other name) gets better. :hugs I had a cochin who got stung by a bee and was all swollen up. It went down after a few days.

Had some mites on my cochins before also. There was a layer of skin that formed (cradle cap) that was over the regular skin. Kind of dried up and yellowish. Just terrible. You could peel it off but had to soak it first or put oil on it. In some spots it was still connected and I had to wait to pull it off. Sure glad to get rid of the mites they were terrible.

Something I've been asking myself lately about my breeding program, and I thought I'd ask the thread members as well. We all know that it can sometimes take a few years and/or generations to achieve the results we are looking for, whether it be correcting type, color, pattern, or all of the above. So here's my question to everyone - try to limit your answers to just one or two sentences.

What is your 3-year (or 5-year) goal for your Cochin flock and breeding program?

These are the birds I ended up hatching from her eggs. All are 6 months old (mottled) or younger in the photos.
I like this one but I think I want even better. I want to have a couple of nice birds that are worth showing and something that'll do good at the shows.

But I'm still thinking I might have to order some of Roslyn's blue calico eggs just because they're pretty. lol Just to have as pets.

I have a "Blue Calico" from her eggs that looks exactly like the pullet in the 3rd picture. Nothing I would use for breeding, that's for sure.
I have a Mille Fleur pullet from her eggs who has turned out pretty nice; lighter buff base color.
& here's my blue mottled from her eggs.
That's probably what my blue hen will end up looking once she finishes molting. I'm just guessing though, I don't know what she looks like fully feathered. I picked her up and she looked like a disaster with feathers missind and tons of pins coming out. lol I didn't care, I just wanted her for a pet.

look in my photo album linked on my profile. there's a cochin folder there. pretty much all my black/self blues & the mille fleur rooster, plus any silver laced (might be in another folder) are from Roslyn's line, except the self blue girl I got from another breeder. all the young mille fleur pictured are from the one roo and the blue partridge split girls.
Will do, thanks.

Just starting out, so my goal is probably different than most of yours... My current 3-year goal: Have both kids in school full time so I have time for my Etsy business, so we can afford to move somewhere with more land, a polebarn or room to to build a better set up for chickens. Don't get me wrong, I love our run and coop right now but it was the first we built and at that time I was just thinking about pets, not showing and keeping different groups of birds separate. We also can't free range any "pet" chickens here. Our neighbor has all their flower gardens surrounded by electric fence to keep the deer out, so I'm sure they would not take kindly to my chickens snacking on their magazine-worthy gardens. Once I get my flock established I will have other goals more specific to improving my birds.

I was just down feeding my chickens when I noticed one of the cochin chicks has a very clear blue barred pattern. Absolutely amazed once again. We got our first flock 5 years ago which consited of a 11 hens and 1 rooster. They were pet quality LF cochins in the colors white, black, and partridge. I hatched my first chicks that fall and over half of them were blue! The other half was black. I was so excited that I had a new color, a beautiful blue. Next hatch, I got 3 unique looking chickens. One looked like a lemon blue and another 2 hens looked exactly like brown reds. Now I've got what appears to be blue barred. It's definately a blue chick with an obvious barring pattern. I have no idea how these colors came from partridge, white, and black but I love them. I know the genetics must be srewed up for this to happen, but I will be keeping them for layers as I look for better quality cochins to breed in separate pens.

Here is a few of my crew:

This guy was born in August. I think he has the BIGGEST feet I have ever seen in a chicken.
They are twice the size of all the Cochins I have.
ROFL my first thought was that someone stuck a bantam on LF legs. LOL ought to name him Wookie. kinda looks like chewbaka
