Cochin Thread!!!

I was wondering if anyone could help me evaluate these birds. I know they all have their faults, but I was interested in getting feedback. I am pretty new to cochins. Don't worry about hurting my feelings, Iv'e raised animals long enough to not take it personal... :)

Please keep in mind, I just pulled these up from their runs, bathed them and put them in cages about 3 days before...

These are Spring 2012 babies

The sun was setting while I was taking these, and in the pictures I noticed there was some reflection that looks like bleaching... I relooked at them and could not see those bronze colors in person.

Pullet 1- Dark blue, is this too dark? I am trying to get an idea of scale of color...

Pullet 2- Medium Blue

Pullet 3 - Light Blue

Thanks for any help in advance!!

Hi, I am in Australia so do not know if anything simililar overthere. I have never seen it since but once was enough. I had a chicken with similiar swollen eye. Rang a vet and he suspected "eye worm" no idea of correct name. Advised a diluted peroxide solution (cannot remember dilution so please do not just experiment) be sqeezed into eye. It was horrendous, these tiny worms exited the eye immediately. Really gross but extremely effective.

Eye worm is something else. This isnt that, if it were then the birds eye would be swollen, not around it. I thought that was the issue with my bird as well, then quickly realized I was wrong.

Looks like you have some pretty decent birds here. The best one in my opinion is the 3rd pullet, her type seems to be the best. All 3 have really nice wings, set nicely up and to the body, and short. The first looks to be too dark I agree, but she could produce some nice Blues if bred back to Blue or Splash. I think she also has the best head, comb, and wattles. The 3rd pullet has a nice comb but her wattles are a bit large, and the 2nd one has a nice comb but uneven wattles. I think overall you have some pretty nice birds here.

I like the #3 pullet best for type, #1 the least. The #1 pullet doesn't have enough head for me for a LF and has a high tail set. Can't judge the width of these birds from these pics. Look for width from all sides. There is a lot of talk about cushions, but it seems to me that the main tail feathers are the foundation for the cushion and need to be short, broad and well spead. Not pinched.

From materials on a truck to building up in less than 9 hrs. Tomorrow I HAVE to wash birds for the show this weekend! This will be my new Cochin shed when I get it finished on the inside later this fall.

More or less finished the outside today. Second picture gives you an idea of the work left for me to do! Electrical next then on to the insulation and wall work before I can think about cages and pens.

Well tomorrow morning at 9 am is official day 21 for my six mottled cochin eggs. One of them was pipped this morning, and three more have pipped during the day. No peeps or movement that I can see which makes this the quietest bunch of chicks ever and has me worried. One Hygrometer says 62% and another says 81% so hopefully okay humidity but who knows - stupid technology. Going to eat a bowl of mint choc chip icecream, go to bed and hope to wake up to some fluffy-butts in the morning, pics to follow!

Hi, some advice re cochin feet. Re the 2nd toe being feathered: should it be feathered on both sides preferably of that toe? Any good cochin feet pictures?
Also I have read here that "swarthy" yellow is ok (may have spelt that wrong?) any of this colour feet in pics?
Thank you
Casey- re eye worm what is the treatment if you do come across it? Thanks

Hey All.

Here are some pics of our first time mama, with her first hatch!! Special thanks to Black Cochin Bantams(Craig) for answering all my first timer questions. Out of five we had two hatch yesterday, and two so far today. Dora is sitting on the last egg now.

With regards to the yellow/grey, are those from the barred self blue project? I have no idea what colour they will turn into, any advice please let me know.

yes the light ones look to be self blue. if they have a white spot on top of their head, they would be barred. can't tell from the pic.

congrats on the chicklets.
