Cochin Thread!!!

If your looking for the best bang for your buck I would go with a good quality pair of blues. Blue bred to blue will yeild 50% blue 25% splash and 25% black. So basically you can get three colors from one color. If you decide to go that route choose correct colored blues with good lacing. From my experience breeding the blacks from a blue to blue mating back to splash(laced) makes the best colored-laced blue. Good luck regardless what color you choose.

Very interesting. Now, a question regarding breeding, I realize mother/son, father/dau can be bred as line breeding, now I have a blue/slate color splash pullet, I'd like to breed it with the splash sibling. Now is that to close in breeding... I know, really stupid question, but I appreciate your help.

Do you mean brother/sister?? I'm sure everyone has their opinions about line and inbreeding however I would not breed brother to sister, that's just me. Father/daugter, mother/son, yes one generation. Breeding that close can have it's ups and downs. Be careful not to breed in any bad traits. In other words don't breed two birds together with the same faults. Choosing birds that will compliment each other is always best. For example you would not want to breed to birds together both with bad wings, no middle toe feathering or lack of feather ect.(I'm talking cochins) I'm no pro but have made my far share of breeding mis-haps. Everyone has their way of doing things, this is my opinion based on my experiences. I'm sure others care share their ideas as well.

Good luck,
Shari

I've been looking for some good columbians. Going to try to "make" some buff ones in the spring. If you want a black cochin to go with your splashes to make blue I can send you some eggs n/c. It will be a while tho- the hens are coming out of a molt. PM me if you want
