Cochin Thread!!!

I keep mine on clean deep shavings and wire. Cochins naturally have pretty strong foot feathers, much stronger then my silkies, they hardly ever break foot feathers unless in a breeding pen or cockerels fighting with eachother. For that reason alone I don't keep my cochin cockerels together when they get of breeding age.

I agree, cochins have more durable foot feathering than my silkies too. That's a stunning avatar...one of your kids??

Hey all,

How often are you suppose to bath cochins?

Not bathed any of mine yet there only 4 months old..

Bathed the ducks the other day, got some photos well funny ! They loved it!!

Kitty, I keep our (5 acre lawn) mowed short for starters, and tha IS just the lawn! Plus we bathe regularly, which I think is important, and keep the bantams on soft footing when inside the building. I use sawdust that's a bit larger than average, and it allows the foot feathers to "expand" naturally. If I were to put my cochins out where my marans run, they would have a FIT! All are very prissy, even my roo, but I think that's just because we spoil them rotten!

Aww! I wonder...do they lay rotten eggs because you spoil them so much?? LOL

I love spoiling my birds.
Do they get grass stains on white feathers?? I have one white cochin roo...posting pics after they upload...
I've only ever bathed a chicken once! It was really fun and the roo actually seemed to enjoy it!
Thanks for replying.

I don't show any chickens.... YET... So I try to collect as much information as I can from BYC so when I do decide to show I will be prepared!

LOL, R U kidding me?! They ALL come from ROTTEN EGGS! That's why they are so spoiled...lol. No, I dont really seem to have much of a "staining" problem, but I'm ruthless with the mower too

Hi Chirpy, Well quite honestly, I only bath mine about once a month (or every 6wks when they REALLY need it) and when we are going to a show of some kind. I know others are more consitant than I am, however I think a chicken should be allowed to be "a chicken" too. So maybe I'm not the best person to be giving advice...haha.

If you want to hatch your own eggs and want Black Standard Cochins, PM GreenfamilyFarms. She has SQ and I highly recommend her.

I don't have any of her chickens right now but I've seen pics of her stock and they're gorgeous!

I highly recommend greenfamilyfarms black standard cochins. I ordered 6 eggs, got 2 extras, and hatched six chicks. They are 6 weeks old now and beautiful!

You guys kill me with such amazing birds! The white cochins catch my eye, but so doing everyone elses. Speaking of cochin x , I have a standard EE and my Bantam Cochin cross. She has only the outside toe feathered, dark tops and yellowish bottoms to her feet, down turned tail feathers and energy beyond belief! I cannot wait to see her grow up!!!

My heart is with the egg layers, yet Scooter is where my heart is. He goes with me to functions, like a service animal, as long as I have Scooter to talk about, then I'm pretty good at standing and mingling around shows and stuff.
Sounds pretty simple, but hes my little brat...yes, spoiled is what they are, why not. They are better at kids, you don't have to buy the "in" clothes, shoes, toys or trinkets, they are appreciative if you let them out of the pen to graze, give them stale bread and fresh water, they are grateful! (heee heee hee)

Thank you for the "inbreeding" and line breeding rules of thumb. Even if its your opinion, I need to look ahead at what I'm doing. Great points.

How do you keep your birds from getting poopy butts? Should I trim in the winter/fall or is it something we all deal with ?
Thanks a bunch!

I have 3 partridge and 2 buff cochins from Estes Hatchery. They are awesome. Very friendly and cuddly. The buffs started laying a couple of weeks ago (Apr 29 hatch date).
