Cochin Thread!!!

That link is not working for me, but I did see all your photos from the CI link on FB and they are great. I had a scare last night when I did not see Bluebell - the mottled pullet I just got from you - in the coop with my other chickens after dark. I turned on the light and found her underneath my 3 silkie hens, cozy as can be. So I guess she has been accepted into the coop! She was also "crowing" yesterday morning which I found pretty funny since I am quite sure she is in fact a pullet.

I have a question regarding type/shape. Just exactly how early do you more experienced breeders have an idea if your bird will have decent potential? I'm not talking about combs and feet - I talking overall type - full chest, good neck, waterfall cushion, etc?

Do you see a difference at one (1) month of age? Can you pick out at one month the ones with better potential?

I've been tracking the development of this year's chicks in one-month increments with photos. At one month, some look much, much better than others - well, as good I guess as a one month old chick can look.

At 2 and 3 months, every single one of them is leggy, long-necked, and totally out of proportion - like a teenager. I was ready to cull every single one of them.

But now at 4 months, they are settling back in, and the best ones are the same ones that were the best ones at one month of age - only now bigger. For some, it seems their silhouettes look almost the same, only bigger.

Is this all just a coincidence? Or it could just be my eyes - I am getting up there, you know.
Gail,
I've found it depends on the variety. Typically my Blacks and Whites look like little miniature versions of their future selves once they feather out with their first set of feathers. So do the Barreds. Buff are completely different. Very leggy as immature birds and fill in later, especially the males.

Sorry it took me so long to get better pics of my black cockerel. This is the only day I've had to get out there with the camera again.
Now, the sun does make it look like he has some gold leakage, but it is only because the sun.

The third is his natural shape. Number one and four he's trying to find away from my friend behind the nest box door and out of the pen. Second one kinda shows that he's as wide in the cushion as he is in his chest. I took a pic of his butt / under fluff form the back but it came out blurry. He was hatched in June, so he's around 5 months now.

I know he isn't as nice as many show birds, but he is my nicest as far as type. I am wondering how he compares. Would he benefit me in a black breeding pen? Does he show any showing potential? My kids will be showing locally (fairs), but I may consider going to York in spring. I am going to buy chickens, may as well take a bird to show if he's nice enough, right?

Thanks!

I feel like the GLCs take a long time to come together too. There is an age where I think I need to cull them all.

I had it set to friends only, I guess that's the default. Changed it to public so it should work now. Your videos were great, but if you want to get all the birds you have to get there early or do it on saturday. Looks like a lot were gone. Glad to hear that pullet is doing well with the others. Love the name Bluebell! so cute! She's definately a pullet too, she has laid lots of eggs here. I have had a few hens that crow, not sure why, but oh well.

same here with my mottleds, they show type early. It must be something with the GL also, them and my BLR's are slow to show type
