Cochin Thread!!!

I had it set to friends only, I guess that's the default. Changed it to public so it should work now. Your videos were great, but if you want to get all the birds you have to get there early or do it on saturday. Looks like a lot were gone. Glad to hear that pullet is doing well with the others. Love the name Bluebell! so cute! She's definately a pullet too, she has laid lots of eggs here. I have had a few hens that crow, not sure why, but oh well.
Yes, I was bummed when I realized that people packed up early. Makes sense though - I know I would be eager to get home with my birds. I will be sure to take it early enough the next show I am at and use my actual video camera with stabilization. So funny though - whenever I play the clips with all the roosters crowing, the one in my basement starts right up.

Here are my two Matt McCammon lovelies from the Ohio Nationals! A special thanks to Black Cochin Bantams for letting me know he had some available. They are about 6 months old, and still have lots of filling in to do. I gave them baths when I got home and could not believe how many pinfeathers they have poking through to grow in yet, they are already so fluffy!

Not supposed to coop out early but I know there were people there from about 30 states plus Canada. Lots of road time ahead for many of them and some have to go to work on Monday. Hope I have something worthy of shoiwing for next year. Want to go back because it is the closest many of us get to an event like Crossroads was. I enjoyed your video and Mandys pictures! Thank you

I stumbled on this article yesterday on Molting Laying Hens while looking for something else - very informative - perhaps more so if you are trying to predict the show condition of your hens. ( I had no idea that there is an exact order to which every single feather is lost.)

BTW - After a total egg drought for the past 2+ months, I collected ONE egg this morning. It was still warm and she'd already managed to get it dirty, but it was the prettiest egg I've seen in a long time!!! I still get eggcited after all these years!!

So now that I have these nice/expensive cochins, I am thinking more about my feed. I always fed everybody either Layena or Kent Layer for my hatchery birds. Should I continue with this, or will the extra calcium be detrimental to the roosters or birds that are not laying because of the season change? None of my pullets have given me any eggs, although I was told they did earlier in the year. I see some of you use gamebird + poultry finisher + oyster shell and wonder if this would be a better option for having a mixed bunch of birds when it comes to ages and males/females? I would love to hear from those of you who condition your birds for show.

I use a quality 18% layer/breeder feed. It is complete and I find nothing more is needed.

I just heard back from Sheryl Butler.
