Cochin Thread!!!

The second variety I hear lots of wishes for are LF Mille Fleur Cochins. Genetically this would require LF Buff Columbian according to most breeding programs along with Mottled (no problem). I guess one could go from BuffxColumbian cross to get the buff columbian genetics needed.

I would hope they don't start Mille Fleur at least until they get a sufficient quantity of proper Mille Fleur in bantams. It really bothers me to see so many birds indentified as Mille Fleur when they are clearly not and if they are project and working toward MF then identiify them as that. I've really only seen a few that were real MF, Annamay Carlson has some roos that are very nice and you can tell without a doubt that they are MF, but she also states that currently the roos are much better than the hens. I would agree with that and I've only seen one female that was/is a real MF and she belongs to someone on here..........I think it's Twyla maybe or Stephanie???? just can't remember. She is just gorgeous and very proper.
As far as breeding up or down or seperate, I'm pretty sure they are the same breed and the bantams are products of breeding down, but I wouldn't bet money on that. I would bet that Gail knows the answer to this one.
One other thing, it is my understanding that Mille Fleur comes from Mottled and GL. I only know this because I was talking with some folks about a very beautiful Mottled hen with an interesting genetic back ground. It was suggested that I breed her to a Golden Lace for Mille Fleur.

actually, mille fleur is columbian, mottled & the melanizing gene (Ml). some might argue that Ml isn't necessary, but in an e+/e+ bird, the Ml gene gives dark tips to the feathers. with Co added in, that spreads the dark tips over the whole body and they become darker. then adding the mottling gene for the white tips.

I think it is my "Mellie" you are talking about. She has the best pattern for a hen and very good type. Not SQ perfect, but pretty good for a Mille Fleur project bird.

Stephanie, unless her pictures are very misleading about her quality, I would certain call her show quality. Don't forget you would be showing her as a non-approved variety and the only birds that might have better quality would be splash. I guess you can't get points or place any higher than BV or rather AOV, but sometimes it's not about points or big wins. I don't show Black or White but I love showing my less well known birds that won't go any further.

Thanks Nancy, but there are a few people on here that don't think her type is any good. Though in this project I have not seen more than 2 birds with really good type.

The Eastern Iowa Poultry show is being held this weekend. I took a few pictures of our show rooms and two of a friends Bantam Black Pullets. Any question of what type a show bird really is can be answered by looking at those pullets. I have no results except for the Jr show at Black Cock was reserve featherleg behind a White Silkie.
