Cochin Thread!!!

~Wow, the colored Dorking looks a lot like a silver-grey.
Which are the males? If I had to guess I'd say the bird in front of the Dorking... and maybe the one behind, farthest to the right?

Are there any differences in the feathers/coloring of male and female Cochins while they are young?
silver grey wouldn't have the golden hackle and brown body, she'd be entirely silver/grey with a salmon breast.

the cockerels are the 2 closest to the front (bottom)... the rest are pullets.

it depends on the color variety as far as color differences in cochins when they're young. for mille fleur, not really... can't say for sure about all the other varieties, but the solid colored ones, no there isn't any difference.

I have a question. I want to purchase a breeding pair, possibly a trio, of Cochins to breed. I would prefer to purchase them from someone in my area. My two options right now are Ed and Marjorie Best and Doddie Truedson. I did try contacting Sheryl Butler but never heard back. Out of these two options, who has the better stock?

I sent you contact information on November 8 in a PM. I would not have given that information out if there was a question about breeder ethics or the quality of their birds. Hope one of them has what you are looking for. There are more and more people wanting quality birds. There are only a few established breeders of some varieties and they are not hatcheries but hobby breeders with limited number they will hatch and raise in a given year.

Hey I have heard that cochins will sit on other chickens eggs. Do they do this, how good are they because I would rather have a momma to sit on the eggs than an incubator.

Yes, some girls will sit on a rock and try to hatch it. They are great Mamas. My roos are even helpful with chicks. I have seen a couple of them guard eggs while the broodie is up for water and a snack. A couple of my girls will peck other hen's chicks though.

They are EXCELLENT Mommas. I have 2 bantam Mille Fleur cochins. Last spring I put 8 full size eggs under each one of them, they hatched and took very good care of the chicks ! Just waiting for them to go broody again ! It's much easier than using a bator.

It is true that Cochins are good mothers. That said you can not count on one being broody when you want them to be. You still need an incubator or a friend with one for those instances when natural incubating does not work.

Quote: or the instance where she gets bored and stops setting the eggs after 18 days of incubation...

that's why i'll incubate everything myself, relocate momma to an inside nest, and give her the eggs when they would go in lockdown. then i can monitor her and the eggs on her inside nest and judge if she's going to be a good momma or not.

Say you incubate the eggs yourself and put the chicks under her? Would she accept them? I've heard some people grousing about the ways their broodies disassemble chicks.

That is not what was said.:" that's why i'll incubate everything myself, relocate momma to an inside nest, and give her the eggs when they would go in lockdown. then i can monitor her and the eggs on her inside nest and judge if she's going to be a good momma or not."
