Cochin Thread!!!

Can someone give me some input of Duane Urch's Bantam buff Cochins. I've seen his partridge (LF and Bantam), black Bantams, and white Frizzle Bantams, but never the buff. Are his buff good quality, or not so much, like his partridge? Thanks.

At our local county fair last summer I saw a buff that was not great but also definitely better than hatchery. I talked to the boy and his dad about the bird. It came from Urch. Call them and ask if they will have some again this year. Best way to find out is call, Urch/Turnland Poultry

Duane Urch breeds and sells show quality fowl. Call between 7pm and 9pm CST. My comments to them were he is definitely better than hatchery and he is too young to do well in a fair in July. They kept the bird and entered him in the Jr show at EIPA last November. He was second in breed behind a Black that came from me and ahead of Columbians that came from me. Great show bird? NO but he turned out decent in a variety where you look to find decent. Hope that helps.

Thanks. That's where my Cochins I got last week are from. My frizzle was from him as well. They are feathering in buff, and I won't be showing them until August. Hopefully I get a decent pair out of the batch that I can start out breeding with.

I came across a picture of one of the absolute best Bantam Cochin Frizzles I have ever seen. No need for me to try and describe how well this bird is, the picture speaks for itself.

This was a bird bred and raised by Bruce Robinson several years ago. Sometime around 2002 if I remember correctly. This is what I am striving to create and produce as a breeder.

Casey, Mr. Robinson's bird is certainly beautiful, but it might help us all if you could critique it for us. To me, yours are just as good, some maybe better. Why would you judge this bird to be better?

Well, Gail, thank you for those kind words!

To me, this bird is one of the best I have ever seen (not saying it is a flawless example, even from the picture I would say this birds wing could be better) because of the overall type he has. Not only does he have good feather quality, but type seems to be a little more on point then some other frizzles, including my own. As you know when breeding anything, type is most important and this bird to me has very good type, for a Cochin Bantam and represents a frizzle very nicely. His cushion and head line up as the standard describes a Cochin should, he seems well balanced overall.

It may just be myself being too humble about my own birds, not seeing how they stack up against this one.

What struck me right off was how thin the feathers looked - some almost stringy. Even though frizzle feathers are curved, shouldn't they still be wide like a smooth Cochin? Your birds never look stringy to me - always seem to have nice wide feathers.

But he certainly deosn't seem frazzled - just very thin feathers.

Guess that's why I don't raise Frizzles. Yes - he does have nice type, but overall, I think I prefer yours. You don't give yourself enough credit.

I'm very new to this, so my words probably don't mean much, but I absolutely love your birds. Again, I don't know much, but I personally like the rooster in your avatar, and the 2 pullets you posted a while back better. They have a nice round full shape with beautiful feathers. Take pride in your birds, they are amazing!

Casey, this is a beautiful boy but I agree with the others....Yours are spectacular~! "IF" I raised this type, I would want to start with your birds.

I agree with your comment and Caseys. If you were starting when Bruce Robinson had birds you would have wanted his. That is a good typed bird! Bruce Robinson had Best Cochin at 2006 Crossroads events. In 2006 you would have wanted birds from Craig Carrol, Bruce Robinson,Jimmy Currens, Matt McCammon, Tom Roebuck, Judy Gaant, Mark Peterson. In 2013 your list of go to breeders has changed some. But some of those names remain the same. Some breeders have quit raising some varieties and added new ones. Change happens but Bruce Robinsons bird would be a very good bird now like it was back then.
