Cochin Thread!!!

He's nice..... and I laughed about the "he smells fantastic"

When I first started showing and washing birds, I used Paul Mitchell Shampoo ONE - they looked shiny and smelled like coconut oil. I took my two birds to the fair and won a TROPHY. I thought they were real winners! Little did I know that the trophy was for being an amateur first time show person

A few weeks ago I brought in my two frizzle pullets and washed them up. Well, last night I brought my little frizzle male in and washed him up. Although, I will say that the corn (not a small amount, not large either) has really yellowed his hackles. He was the most curious bird I have ever seen! He would not sit still, wanted to check everything out and follow everyone around begging for treats. I did get a couple ok shots of hit, about 2/3 of the way dry. Once he finishes out he will look good. I noticed he also has several pin feathers, so he has yet to fully fill out. Should be looking pretty good for Spring shows in April I have planned, and if nothing else, he smells fantastic. :)

... I try and feed mine only organic...with no soy or corn and free of GMO... can you get the yellow out? will it fade out with time if you stop feeding corn? I have heard it happens to silkies as well and the sun does it also...

nothing wrong with getting a little trophy for being a novice...what fun... I have only show twice and that has been my silkies...and i have been super happy with my birds just being there and people saying nice things about them...people are really nice (so far) and I love seeing big breeders amazing birds...everyone likes comments...especially helpful ones...

I just washed two of my cochins last night...they are spending the day in my bathroom while I'm at work so they don't get dirty again...i hav two more to do tonight for the Newnan show on Saturday...am excited but not expecting my birds to place or anything...just wanting to see what critique people might have...

I know Judy Gaant, Jackie Jordan, Kyle G and several other Cochin people will be there. Those folks know Cochins!

6 of the 12 have hatched ,2 more hard at it. Looking good considering they were shipped from South Dakota to Oregonian cold weather. Beginning to feel confident , maybe 10 will hatch, maybe 12!!!! I am pleased .

Yes, the corn I fed throughout the Winter done this. I also believe that he is just dirty. I didnt give him a bath like I would before a show, this was just a clean up. Trimmed nails and beaks, and to see his full potential once clean-ish. The thing is, out of all my birds, he is the single one who has a tinge of yellow-ish coloring to his hackle. None of the other birds developed this, being fed the same feed. But, I have recently changed their feed so we shall see what he looks like come show time.

Thanks everyone, I am pretty happy with him. I have another cockerel also that I plan to keep for a back up, he is also looking pretty good.
